Just what has this place been up to? Can anyone remember more than a year behind? While some events, such as the Great Locking, were unique enough to be heralded in songs and legends for centuries to come, somewhat lesser events often require a little digging to remember. In fact, the board in January was a rather different community than the ATT today.
I've attempted to compile (and will probably need to edit this for a more extensive list) a bunch of topics to create a timeline of events, of a sort. This isn't intended to cause us to mope and long for the old days, its simply here for curiosity, how the lifeblood of the place has altered over time, impacted by individuals and events.
January: Just another average month kicking off the start of the new year. One difference from today to note is the B&B's role of an allied board rather than a competitor. In fact, we even offered disaster relief as they underwent a turbulent start to the new year. January also marked the final denouement of the Azzy/GandalfDaddy crew (no more AzzyArt ), lobf's last major topic, and the triumphant return (followed by hasty retreat) of Zortrium. The latter became part of the starting flame for the "religion" fad, spawning the Zortriumites, who eventually split into the Lektorians and Puferites, among other zealous groups.
For those that complained today's topics suck and for those rejoicing at the mass lockings in recent weeks, February must be a forgotten memory for you. Indeed, there was a locking spree back then as well, headed by our very own Sundered Angel, who was so inspired and depressed by events (such as the degradation of his Creative Writing inquiry) that he wrote the New York Times #1 bestseller The Ares Trash Talk Etiquette Guide. Whoever said history repeats itself may have been onto something. However, February wasn't entirely horrible, in fact it can be remembered for spawning the largest ASW topic (and spamfest) in board history: Word Association Football.
March was also a relatively low-activity grim month, as everyone recuperated from the full fury of SA's vengeance. In fact, the dominating issue of the month was a bleed-over from the B&B, where Insomniac's death was faked. For those of you who can remember his name, its worth pointing out that Pyro made a brief resurfacing at the close of the month before disappearing into the depths of the veil. Oh yeah, and SA gave up looking after us children and appointed me moderator of ATT.
April wasn't too impressive either, the only remotely notable occurrence being the discovery of Destroyer E's µ-fetish. Though this month was host to an informative topic, asking the Golden Question Why are you here?
The summer months of May and June were typical dull months. (mental note: don't use up all of your negative adjectives so early on in the year) July did host the only really decent event up to this point in the year, the Trash Talk Logo Contest. We also learned not to post online pictures of ourselves, as Vec discovered later. And if you're a careful observer, you can pick out some of the first few posts from the controversial presence of the Apple Cøre. Finally, in world news, the Avara denizens rebelled against the iron fist of their masters, and were subsequently quashed in an overwhelming democratic defeat that would go on to inspire 400-vote Taz jokes for the next few months.
August brought about the departure of then-familliar board members, such as Shrout and the Reno Clan, including the spamaholic greek letter.
I can't seem to find September on the map, there seem to be very few topics from this period, one of them being a failed protest of the power held by Sundered Angel's secret police. How does this board survive the test of time?
October hosted the infamous gravedigging record. And while it officially started in September, I can't find anything else to say about October, so I'll mention that the hostility towards the B&B began to surface here as denizens became to regard former allies as rivals.
November kicked off with the Ambrosia Void Wars and subsequent genocide of the defenseless but overly ambitious Voidwalkers. November further degenerated as the end-of-year spamming spree kicked into full gear, forcing the real moderators to unleash their attack dogs, kidnap innocent children, revive long-dead Guardians of Common Sense, and staple pages describing The Miranda Rights for all hapless board members to read. Yet, the influx of spam and troll topics was hardly impacted until...
...December, the month where the moderators finally snapped and began cracking down on rebellious posters resulting in more topics locked since the Great Locking, topping even February's numbers in topic executions. However, once again, the cake of the month goes to an event hosted in foreign territory. Yes, I'm talking about the dramatic unravelling of the semi-mysterious "the". While the full story is much more filling, it is also still covered in classified labels, and as of yet unreleased to public viewing.
That brings us to today. Over the year familiar members have left, newer faces have shown themselves (including the silent, mysterious Ben Adams), the dead came back to life, and we've really just ended back where we began the year, with a mess.
The moral of this story is to not make topics like this which attempt to dig up history, because its incredibly time-consuming and makes you realize just how insignificant the year was. Ouch, not doing this again.
PS. If any of you feel I've left out significant topics or insignificant topics worth mentioning above, post them below and I might be inclined to edit them in at some point in the future. (yep, edited already, forgot topic 101332, added link to 96655)
