Let me help you then.

Ask her to the dance, or I will beat you backside the head with a ball-pein hammer until your eyes fall out.
Seriously man, do it. Even if it turns out badly you can always save yourself with a "y'know, as friends," remark.
I already was going to... I just need to wait for winter... Now I'm thinking about finding a place to hide.

Are you 100% sure that there will be a dance? Because if you are, you can ask her out to the pending dance, just to get it the heck over with.

Get it out of the way as early as possible. I can say from experience that waiting too long is a really bad idea. You run the risk of someone else asking her first, which leads to one of the most disspointing situations ever. You finally get the nerve up to ask her, and you get the horrible response, "Sorry, I'm going with [insert other dude's name here]."

Imagine how much it would suck to have thought wrong, though.

Conversely, imagine how great you'll feel for the next month+ knowing that you got a cute date for the formals.

There's really no reason to put it off longer, unless you want to get to know her more first so she'll be more comfortable with it, but since she's already begging you to ask her out...

Indeed, I think it would be best for you not to wait and ask her now. It's not an uncommon thing to do, for instance, just about all of my friends have already paired off for our winter formal (rather leaving me all by myself, but I can whine about that later), and it's at least a month away. It also saves a lot of trouble to ask early, you don't have to worry about other guys taking her instead, or her getting frustrated and losing interest in you, or putting it off far too long so that it's even more awkward when you do ask (it happens), or any of a multitude of other possible things.

I can understand your reservations, but there's a point where you really just have to grow a pair and do what needs to be done.
I guess so.

Wow, OK, at first I read that as "You've still got a mouth" and I was dazed and confused.

I read your post wrong and was wondering why you were confused about the month...

She might want to get her dress, etc., squared away early. A month isn't all that long.

Chicks love plenty of time to get their s### together, and gossip with all of their friends about their hair/dress/makeup. Also, it's very easy to say "I've still got a month...I can wait." But that time will go by far faster than you want it to.

Worst comes to worst he can pick up a hooker on the way to the dance. What's the worst that could happen?

Pah. I'm sure we could come up with worse things that could happen than him merely getting AIDS.

However, as I presume that he could do better than the "corner crack whore" level of prostitute, he probably would just have a good time and will have done his part in supporting the local economy in this time of economic uncertainty.
