Oi! And just what the hell is that supposed to mean!?

BTW: I'm kidding, though I'm friends with several people who's current line of work would likely incline them to take exception to that remark. ;)

You seem to be championing the military a fair amount, what's your motivation/background?

Also CZB, I thought you were talking USAF not Army?

First of, Congrats on 500! :P

Every branch has different standards, Army will generally take you no matter what (with the exception of felonies, I believe, not too sure). They each have different disciplines, I'm not bashing on the Army, just pointing it out ;)

I've been in JROTC for three years, almost four, but due to the school counselors being lame, I can not take it this year :/ My father was a Captain in the USAF (albeit just four years), and his father was a USAF Brigadier General. On my mother's side, I have various relatives who served in the USAF as well. I have an immense amount of respect for anyone who would lay down their life (if necessary) or who just serves their country, regardless of the political administration calling the shots.

I was just curious as to undead_shadow's comment of "What makes you want to join the army Zaphod anyway?" I'm not here to bash on anyone who dislikes the military, I'm just curious.

Anyways, we're still going on a tangent I didn't intend >_>

Wait, so if you commit a felony they won't let you join?
Does this mean that if we have a draft if you commit a felony you can't be drafted either?!

Thanks. ;)

Anyway, don't worry about it. I was just giving you a mock hard time because most of the friends I mentioned run the whole gamut of branches anyway. Though one of them that's in the Army is a bit of a hothead. So in reality just one might've minded if any.

Yeah, I suspected something along those lines were the case, and I was just curious. That sucks about JROTC, but oddly enough I've got a friend in that too. Between college, HS, and my neighbors I know my fair share of people in the service.

Yeah, I know, but Army is easier to say.

No matter the circumstances, when I say Army in reference to myself, I usually mean USAF.

ON TOPIC!

Honestly, I thought you guys would give some suggestive advice then go off topic by the 3rd post, and have had 3 topics by the end of the page. Instead, it lasted about 5 pages, then started on German, then somehow got back to the Girlfriend topic, now it's on the Military. I really like where this is going.

You know, I wonder what she would say if I told her I wanted to join the military....

Well, thats not really something you have to worry about till your 18. Especially since your not near your the conclusion of your senior year, in which case it'd become a possible relationship factor... Which I've brought up with mine, although I've yet to make a final decision on whether or not I want to enlist or go the officer route.

And ATT seems to be drawing me in, as it is more active than the boards I normally frequent...

Oh and on a random note (which I don't think is that uncommon), I can help you with German if you need it, going on my fifth year of it...

Speaking of German, I'm listening to a German song right now.

I'm only in my first year, and I know what it all means.

Because he never answered it. Maybe to you he doesn't have to explain himself but I remeber when I was depressed once and my dad talked to me and played me two songs. One was Bjork - I miss you, the other some weird disco music about 18 year olds dying in the Vietnam war. I was considering suicide (I do not use this word lightly) and his reason/s for playing me the songs were:

Bjork: If you take your own life now then you will be messing up someone elses future (a warped but interesting view on "there's someone for everyone")

Vietnam: I think it was more about thinking... All those 18 year olds threw their lives away when they joined the war. Instead they could have stayed at home and aged, had a family and died naturally etc. He suggested joining the army as a last resort.

I've read a few Andy Mcnab and Chris Ryan (SAS war heros) books. They both made points about how the army treats you like sh*t and it being all a waste of time anyway because other people are playing with your lives.

As I have said before I've watched and read "All Quiet on the Western Front" and that again tells me that war was pointless. Full Metal Jacket was just the army as bullying b*st*rds.

Then I watched an army general (in a different programme) condone the bullying because it was done to show the newcomers that they had unreached boundaries (that apparently could only have been reached by abuse??).

I just think of all things worthwhile you could ever possibly be, in the army isn't one of them. I've wanted to kill people sure but I wouldn't want to do it for a living.

I know that my views might be ignorant, pig headed and offensive but I haven't intended them to be that way. I'm just stating it as I see/feel it.

At the time when I first wanted to be in the military, I hated my life, and found it a good alternative to suicide, because if I was meant to die, it would've been in there. However, I'm only going to do that as a last resort now, because my life has changed for the better, but I'm unsure about my future.

In my humble opinion, the Army is one of the last branches you should choose. War is pointless (and always has been), and with Vietnam, some people didn't have a choice about whether they wanted to go (the Draft). The US Army is not known for its good treatment of soldiers..

I've never watched FMJ, nor do I intend to, just a personal choice. In defense of the Army and Drill Instructors in general, its their job to get you from an ordinary citizen into someone who can handle the stresses of combat. There is probably a better way to do it, granted, but just look at the training for Russian Special Forces...

And you can do other things in the military besides killing... or join the US Coast Guard :P

Well, there's a good reason we have a much more powerful military than any of the rest of the world. Our drillers are hard-asses.

It's all a matter of training. The Russian Special Forces may be better treated, but compared to the Almighty U. S., they're softies, and they could be eliminated, if we so desired.

And your sig isn't right, either.
Slavery? Well, technically there is still slavery & sex trafficking today. But I'm going to assume you're probably talking about slavery of Africans in America. The Civil War, despite popular conception, began as a conflict about how much power the federal government should have over the states. The emancipation proclamation wasn't signed until the war was already in progress.
Oppression? Still happens all the time!
Genocide? Still happens on occasion.
Communism? Well, there are still a few communist states out there, but it is mostly gone. However, the Soviet Union collapsed because their system was infeasible and there were so many internal problems it crumbled from within. Maybe we held communism back from taking over more than it otherwise would have, but you can't really say we destroyed it. Not to mention, of course, we never actually attacked them.
Fascism? Still out there.
The Nazis? Well, I guess I have to give you that one, but that's a specific group rather than a generalized idea like the others.

Shut up, dumbass. If there wasn't war, we'd still be under control of Great Britain, and our lives would be hell. I'm thankful that we have an all-powerful military, still have the freedom to do what we want in the U. S., and actually have people willing to lay down their lives for the innocent. Our only military threat is Cuba (only because of Dictatorship), and they don't attack us. Yeah, I may be against the war in Iraq, and the war in Afghanistan, but if it wasn't for war, the Nazis would still be around, every black person you see would be beaten every day, and, most of all, we'd still be with Great Britain. So you better shut the hell up, because war has done some wonderful things to those who deserve it!

That's... a lot of assumptions and unexamined thoughts packed into that, Zaphod. The military (and war) isn't all bad, but it's far from being all sweetness and light either. If you ever have to actually go out and fight, you'll understand why.

How is Cuba a threat to us? If we're going to discuss threats, I would say China is a far bigger threat than Cuba, and they're not that much because if they went to war with us, we'd both lose, our economies are very intertwined. Russia's resurgent for now, but once the world's oil begins running out and we switch to alternate forms of fuel that will begin to dry up. So tell me again, how is Cuba our only military threat?
At last he came to a door, with these words in glowing emeralds: THE END OF THE WORLD. He did not hesitate. He opened the door and stepped through.

Uh...calm the ###### down please? I wasn't the one who said that war was pointless, I was just pointing out it didn't stop the things mentioned in Sponge Tom's sig.
I think that, unfortunately, there are some situations where war is the only option, Nazi Germany being one of them (though if an assassination attempt had worked, there is the possibility that it would have just fallen apart anyway without Hitler, as it might have after his natural death, but there's really no way to know that).

And I doubt we'd still be with Britain (almost every other British Empire state is no longer with Britain anymore, and they achieved independence without a major war) or that we'd have slavery (we were one of the last western nations to get rid of it), but it definitely would have taken longer, you're right about that.

Girlfriends>War

Even though I think that all talk of war is over, I felt like pointing out that girls are much more interesting and less agitating to talk/read about. This was a good topic until Sponge Tom flaunted his sig at the war-naysayers.

In recent news, me and a girl (since we are the only ones left at school after 3:30) have been talking about random stuff after school, about the people that go there and all the crap (really, I wouldn't want to be them) that's going on in their lives. And she's very pretty and always has something to talk about. We usually have the same outlook on things, and that is very, very rare. I actually enjoy my time after school now. It is much better than listening to my iPod for 1 and a half hours.

I now officially almost have a date to winter formals. On an orchestra trip yesterday we were talking about random stuff. She's actually one of two people who are really hard for me to annoy since they talk more than I do. I seriously doubt she can go more than three minutes without texting someone. As I said, we were talking about random stuff and somehow ended up talking about the homecoming dance, and then formals. I somehow ended up being enough of a dumbass to not think through my next question of "Well who'd want to go with me?"

"Well I would." First thing I thought was "Ah sh#t. What the hell'd I get myself into now?" followed by "Well she is pretty, and she's really nice. I actually think I do kinda like her." Then I fell asleep. Ten minutes later the bus hit a bump and I bit my tongue which started to bleed profusely. I started ranting to another friend of mine then fell asleep again.

Yes, let's have less of the war-mongering talk about war before Pufer decides to say something profound and rearrange everyone's perceptions about their preconceived conceptions about war and its role in human perception.

And G-Spark: Ask the girl out. Seriously. If she didn't steer the conversation in that direction deliberately in an effort to get you to ask her out, then I'll eat my hat. And it's a very nice hat, so I don't say that lightly.
