As some of you may have heard, operations at Ambrosia appear to be winding down. It not clear what is going to happen to the forums, but it is possible that they might go offline at some point and not be restored.

Should an effort be made to setup an independent forum for Cythera (much like the irc server was moved)?

Personally, I think so. The community is small and relatively inactive at the moment, but it has survived lower activity in the past. Also, its small size makes it easier to move. The Cythera community has probably been slowly dying for some time, but I like to think that it is not quite dead yet.

What are other's thoughts on this issue?

Also, if the forum is moved, what topics should be saved? I'd suggest the Archives at a minimum, although it'd be nice to save as much as possible.

I suspect that if we're looking at moving the forums en masse, the easiest path would be for the different groups (here, the B&B and so on) to communicate and move over to another one single place.

That's kind of what I think Selax has in mind (and what we did for IRC). After all, why put in lots of hard work researching stuff when we can just copy the B&B? ;)

I personally want every single thread. I understand that there's a lot of useless threads (& I guess I'm fine with skipping those), but I don't think it's accurate to say that the majority of the threads were worthless. I'm interested in the threads with discussion about the game, which is what most of them are.

But I concede that the story threads are more important, and probably the first effort should be to save the TSes, Taverns, and Chronicles. I'm not sure what the criteria was for choosing TSes for the Best of Cythera. Are all of the "completed" stories on there? And furthermore, what is "completed"? It seems that all you have to do is say you'll post Part II in a few days, and it counts as a completed story (which may be an idea for how to end OoR, just saying). I want to try to save some of the abandoned stories too.

If they delete this board I'll bug the admins for an IPB export of all the posts, threads and forums made here so we can start a new forum someplace. I'd be heartbroken if this forum got put in a dustbin.

Yes, all "completed" stories automatically made it to the archives, regardless of quality. A completed story is defined as a story where the original purpose was accomplished. There are some stories (like DM) where both the primary plot was complete and a follow-up hook led on to a different story which may or may not have been finished, but the first story was "completed" and thus archived.

It would definitely be easiest to move the forums collectively. Are the B&B and EV Nova discussing a forum move?

There's no talk of moving the B&B yet, going off my conversation with one of their moderators.

I would like the most if Ambrosia forums could continue being here forever.

If that is not possible, then I want all forums here moved to a new forum. With all threads and all posts. I see prophile mentioned "another one single place". So that's why I wanted to clarify: I mean a single forum where all forums are.

The areas I personally care most about are Ambrosia Classics and Just Discuss.

It would be ideal to move all the forums if possible, but I'm not certain which forums are interested in moving.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations about to where we should move? Or, assuming we don't get access to the data to move everything, what format should be used for the moved topics (i.e. just text and poster; text, poster, and date; text, poster, date, and signature; etc.)?

Text, poster, and date. Signature is kind of optional and probably unnecessary.

The type of forum software would make a big difference and probably require a bit of debate.

If we're going down this route, writing a spec before arguing about what software best fits it would probably be an idea...

Which jerk voted against archiving anything? Sely- The threads I've saved to my computer so far (some of the earlier TSes & such) have the post#, poster, date, and text. I've cut out the signatures, avatars, & member titles/info. This just seemed most practical to me.

Have you already worked through the archives? How are you selecting which topics to save?

Also, regarding the forum software, what types are most common right now? Are any other forums considering moving?

I am selecting threads with the highly effective method of saving the ones that strike my fancy :P I have not gone through the archives, I'm going through the forum chronologically. I'm at the beginning of 2004, presently.

I'll probably go through the archives in the next week or two. I suppose I'll also take a look into forum software, but that really is not my area of expertise.

Guess what guys! I've been calling the Ambrosia hotline tons the last couple of days, trying to get someone to send me a Ferazel's Wand CD, and today someone actually answered the phone! Ambrosia is not quite dead yet! :D

(As for the archiving project, I haven't worked on that in ages.)

Bernard. He's being kept on until all Ambrosia's assets have been sold off.

I don't even remember, it's been like two months since I've done anything. It looks like I have the TSes through Missing Sorceress & Taverns through 9. I doubt I have any of the useful info, as I was focusing on stories.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could go ahead and finish out the Best of Cythera. My online courses are wrapping up, but familial matters are likely to continue to constrain me somewhat.
