I don't know what the default Japanese font is on Windows. I have the "MS PMincho" and "MS PGothic" fonts on my Mac, both of which look respectable and are anti-aliased; I think anti-aliasing is just less common in the Windows world, in part because they don't license the patents I mentioned above. I don't think leaving CJK fonts aliased is necessarily a bad idea either, many characters are barely legible when anti-aliased at small sizes.

I don't remember the exact name either (can probably find out tomorrow if I remember), but Mincho sounds really familiar, probably a variant of that. There is also an option to turn on anti-aliasing of fonts on XP ("cleartext"?) that for some reason is disabled by default, but it doesn't seem to have an effect in Word and many other programs.

Okay, it looks like MS Mincho is the default for word, MS P Gothic is default for Excel, I imagine most applications pick one or the other as their default.
