Michael Jackson's son, Prince Michael II will write a memoir in which he wistfully recalls that one glorious moment on the balcony when he nearly escaped.

I started last Monday at 0800. This semester is going to suck simply because of a single class: Latin 101. Don't get me wrong, I can learn foreign languages, but I actually have to study to do so, something that I never have to do with any other area of study. Unfortunately, I do need the foreign language credits so I'll have to fight through it and actually do some work. All the rest of my courses will be fine though.

Why didn't you do a language like Spanish or French? They would be many times easier to learn. Foreign language is my worst subject too, I just barely got an A-, but I think Spanish is a good language because studying gets you far.

Japanese is much cooler than latin, but it requires a bit more of work. Learn from my classmates - if you're taking a foreign language "just to get the credit", don't take latin/japanese, go with something easy - probably spanish because you're in New Mexico and there's an influx (extra credit to the person that does a flux integral on illegal immigration from Mexico to the US) of spanish-speaking people.

I certainly should've taken Spanish instead but UNM makes you take some sort of Spanish placement exam in order to be able to sign up for Spanish courses. Now not only would I have had to take off from work and show up for this two hour test in the middle of summer, but I'd either have to intentionally bomb the test in order to place into a 101 class (something that I wouldn't like doing) or actually perform and end up in a real 202 (Second-Year, Second-Semester Spanish for Spanish majors, I base this on one of my HS buddies who had Spanish skills on par with mine testing into that course when he took the test) and have to do just as much work as I'm doing now.
If the class turns out to be too much, I'll have to drop it, but as that would all but guarantee me an extra semester of college (it's going to be tight as it is). The problem on that front is that the core, lower-level course requirements exceed the number of lower-level courses we can put toward graduation. Everyone ends up either having to take an additional six to fifteen credits past graduation level just to kill off the core or taking a bunch of wild upper level classes not in their areas of study which screws the people who actually need those courses for their major out of a seat. The folks who design these requirements are morons.
