The comps will provide you with a nice place to start practicing. I test strats on insane difficulty comps all the time, and I'm ranked on the ladder, so its worked for me. You will need to play against humans to fine tune yourself, but as far as smoothness/micro practice goes, comps will work fine.
The original purpose of this post was, in fact, to share with you all that me and a kid I know from school who uses the WC3X acc Deaths_Bow have made it onto the ladder in 2:2 AT. Top row, He's on the left, I'm on the right.
