Personally, I wouldn't ask the question. If I were told, I don't think I'd be affected by the answer.

On the use of the word "use" in this context, I think I probably would've reacted a lot worse than SA did, if I didn't think Avatara would know better. I've a strong opinion on the subject...

Hmm... apparently I'm not affected in the same way. I have a good friend who's both - I mean good in a very extreme sense of the word, but friend just as it is.

Wrong. I've had three virgins in my life, and I think that's enough. When I had my first girlfriend, we were both virgins, we both knew how to "do it", but neither of us was really satisfied afterwards. I think everybody should have his/her first time with somebody experienced, so they don't get the feeling of doing everything wrong.

Huh? Is it a bad choice of words? Should I add that with each of the three girls I've had relationships lasting longer than a year?

In my opinion it is an excellent choice of words which, if nothing else, could be considered rather romantic instead of insulting or belittling (contrary to what SA says). Posted Image

Besides, it's idiomatic. "Having a cup of tea" (as I'm currently doing) wouldn't be any good if you didn't drink it. I wouldn't apply that same logic to this situation, but languages do have a tendency to change meanings like that.

Having a girlfriend who is a virgin is romantic. "Having a virgin" is not. Just consider the implications in each and you'll soon get it.

You know, it really is fascinating how deeply ingrained certain modes of thinking are in the societal psyche. I predict it will take at least 50 more years before women are truly equal with men - and that's in the most egalitarian cultures, like Sweden or Denmark.

I figure that using the word "have" in this sense is quite a bit more tactful and poetic that using, say, "screw" (or anything else). Lets just analyze some different terms here:

1. "I done layed'er down, and screwed her brains out!
This one is blatantly coarse, and is certainly not acceptable in any situation.

2. "And then I ****ed his virgin body all night long."
Again, coarse and vulgar. Unacceptable.

3. "I had sex with that virgin."
There is nothing really wrong with this, you are just stating facts. But it just isn't really all that respectful of the act (and can't be used in gentler company; old people).

4. "We layed down upon her bed and after a bit of getting comfortable, she let me have her."
See, now I like that. Everyone knows what you're talking about, yet you are not coming out and saying it. This has a decidedly nice ring to it.

5. "We made love last night."
This, likewise, is pretty darn good. I don't care much for the "love" part, but I'm crazy.

In my opinion, #4 and 5 are perfectly acceptable for wide ranging use. They do convey slightly different images yet both have their purposes. In Clueless's case above, it would sound a bit off to say "I've made love to this number of virgins" simply because it is not something that would be said in a conversation.

Really I think that the problem with all of these statements (regardless of the term used) is the use of "virgin." The western societal model has ingrained a "pure" standard with the term in our thoughts which would taint the use of the term with any verb you could choose denoting a sexual act. While I can see where you're coming from, I don't think that we could say what we're trying to say without offending at least some small part of our minds.

A good analysis. As you point out, pretty much only #4 and #5 are the "right" way to talk about sex. That said, #4 just can't compare to #5.

You see, I don't think it's the word "virgin" which people are so touchy about (at least, not the people I know). It's the word "have", with its connotations of possession. While that is fine in some circumstances - everyone knows that "having" a girlfriend equates with "having" a boyfriend - when it occurs in an unbalanced situation, it takes on subtle overtones.

And let's face it - virginity is still primarily a girl's concern. Our society hasn't yet advanced to the point of sexual equality, despite having reached near legal equality.
