I'm going to add my reply to a B&B thread here because my original post is lame.

I honestly feel the Harry Potter series is the best entertainment literature in existence. Never before have I felt a similar desire for a book to never end. As I read the seventh book, I was torn between a rabid desire to read on, and an overwhelming fear of ending the series, and the immense enjoyment I derived from it. As I write this I still crave more, and will most likely spend the rest of the night reading the book again.

Harry Potter has never really been about the plot in my mind. The plot is easy to follow, and while there are some interesting twists and turns, the reader can predict where the book is going in a broad sense with great accuracy.
The magic and draw of the books is in the vivid world you are transported to. More than any other book, I found myself transported to the world of Harry Potter. I can envision the scenes in book in great detail; much more detail than in any other books I've read.

As escapist writing goes, Harry Potter is king. The idea of suddenly leaving your mundane life to a world of wonder and magic is incredibly enticing. Generally, when I read a book, stimuli in the area I'm reading is still on my mind. However, reading Harry Potter really is like watching a movie. I find myself completely lost in that universe, and that is, I think, what makes these books so wildly popular.

I really don't agree it is a kid's book. Goosbumps are kid's books. Redwall are kid's books. Harry Potter, while it certainly appeals to children in a way other "more mature" books cannot, Harry Potter does not exclude adults as true kid's books do. Yes, Harry Potter was originally targeted at kids 9-12 years old, but that target age does not apply anymore. Anyone can enjoy these books, from a 9 year old kid to a 75 year old grandparent.
You're only hurting yourself it you scorn the series because you're "too cool" or "too old" for it.

Maybe I'm so enthralled by the series simply because I grew up with Harry and co., (The first book came out when I was 10, Harry was 10-11, and the last book came out while I'm 19 and Harry 17) but given how many adults (people who were late teenagers when the original came out in 1998) I know who enjoy the series, I'm inclined to believe I would enjoy the books if introduced to them at any age.

You aren't going to discover the meaning of life, but you will almost certainly enjoy your week's stay in Harry Potter's universe.
Obviously not everyone will like it, and I really feel bad about that. A strange analogy I've thought up is to having the most beautiful woman in the world as your mom/ sister.

I guessed right from the day I got book 1 that there were Vulcans involved somehow.

I just didn't predict the sheer scale of their involvement.

I think the only hope would be to zerg him. I can't think of any quality AOE offensive spells in the Harry Potter universe.

If you don't believe in him, he can't hurt you. Just like robot santa.

Also as a villain, he's pretty incompetent, if you think about it. He's done nothing, ever.

Neither can I, actually.

We'd need a Rogue (to sap), a Tank, a Priest for healing, a Shaman to assist heal, and a Mage.

I think we'd do OK.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled, was convincing the world he didn't exist.

Also, he did a whole lot of stuff actually. Killed, tortured, pillaged. Took over the ministry of magic, converted hundreds of people to his cause.

All you've ever done is act pompously on a web board :P

Uh huh. That's just what they want you to believe, with their revisionist history. What has he ever done in the present?

I have very little interest in talking with snakes. I shouldn't think they would have much of substance to converse with me about.

You could go to the zoo (like Harry) and converse with them about their family and whatnot. How cool would that be :P
