I used to wonder what the birds and/or the bees actually referred to, figuring that there was actually some allegorical story involving the two organisms. By and by, I came to learn that there is no story called "the birds and the bees," neither the birds nor the bees actually represent anything other than words. All the meaning that can be gathered from the phrase is contained in the phrase itself, it refers to nothing.

Say THAT ten times fast!

Pufer: Same deal with "Cat's Pajamas" and "Bee's Knees".

They mean nothing. They just sound kind of cool. And one rhymes.

Well, you don't sit down and discuss the bee's knees with your offspring when they reach a "certain age." However, when you're discussing the birds and the bees with junior, you're literally stating that you're discussing nothing in particular.

I always figured the bee was the male. And other than that I sort of just went with it.

My parents never used the analogy on me. My mom drew me pictures..

Technically, I suppose. But that's only if you take each word at face value. If you look at the phrase as a whole and factor in connoted definitions, then it means sex.

For some reason...

What word can you think of that doesn't mean sex or something related to it?

Oh god...did she really draw you pictures?? That is awesome. You must recreate them for me!

I got the talk when I was 5 or 6 after an episode of Star Trek (I believe it was TNG?) But it was the end of the episode where Q and his "lady friend" put their hands together and "made a baby". So I turn to my mom and say "Well, thats a good way to do it!" (I pretty much knew the basic mechanics of it) and she turns to me and says:

"But, our way is more fun."

.........

I was mortified. I wish I could have seen the look on my face, because it was no doubt priceless. Anyway, this pretty much launched a more in depth talk. It was a good way to fo.
Can you imagine if I was deranged?

Indeed, my mom once told me (when I was very young, too) that if I was going to have sex before marriage, I should at least make sure that it's "safe" sex.

Although I personally think that the safest sex is the lack thereof.

Even if you don't plan to do it, it's better to be prepared and not do it than to do it and not be prepared.

Of course, that's every bit as true after you get married as it is before. Everyone should be more consistent with their beliefs. :P
