Gee.. I really hope I don't get in trouble for this. But I'm curious.

Sex. Everyone talks about it, jokes about it, and quite a few do it. So why is another sexual act so taboo? I really don't see why masturbation is such a feared topic. I find it much more embarrassing to talk about than any other sexual act. Especially when it comes to talking about it with girls. It's weird.

I'm just curious because I'm equally as shy about it.

I can't say that I've ever had any difficulties discussing sex, though I'm not open to discussion of my own sex life. I don't believe in "kiss and tell".

I'm definitely not suggesting we all talk about our sex lives. Some of us probably don't have one anyway

I have spoken about mastrubation with females on at least two occasions that I can recall wherein the conversation addressed the habits of all participants in the conversation. I'm fond of saying that I'll talk about any topic with anybody and, insofar as I've yet to encounter a topic I won't discuss, I feel that to be the case. Anyone want to know anything about me, just ask.

As to mastrubation itself, if you're not doing it, why the hell not? I would have thought a couple years ago that such a question would be very silly as everyone does it, right? Well evidently, and scarily, not, especially amongst members of the fairer sex for the exact reason that µ refers to, embarassment (yes indeed folks, Pufer is using the power of peer pressure to get people to mastrubate more, join him won't you). From what I've read, and it makes plenty of sense to me, in sex surveys most folks generally report having more substantial orgasms of their own making than from actual intercourse. This doesn't necessarily correlate to a reported more satisfactory sexual experience (as Heinlein said, "Masturbation is cheap, clean, convenient, and free of any possibility of wrongdoing–and you don't have to go home in the cold. But it's lonely."), but if your aim is merely to get off (and it should be from time to time), manual labor is generally the best option.

It's amazing how many deny it, but you can tell they're lying.

I once went to a church camp where one of the topics was inevitably sex. There were a few chuckles here and there (this must've been 8th grade) when anything beyond kissing was brought up. But the minute someone said, 'masturbation' the whole room got quiet. No one made eye contact, and even the speaker talking about it seemed uncomfortable.

It certainly strikes me as odd.

I'm sure you can find some study that shows masturbating lowers the risk or testicular cancer.

My question is, what exactly is it that makes the M-word so taboo?

I think "touché" would've been a more appropriate response.

I don't know why. I've had conversations about it with other friends. I'm not exactly sure how I got into them, but we found out that one guy didn't, and everyone was shocked and appalled.

I dont think girls talk about it too much because it looks like they're playing turn-tables, and that is kinda funny... Also I wouldn't say very few people have sex. Just think about it this way: 1 human = 1 sexing ... that's a lot of sexing.

I've actually never thought that talking masturbation is a taboo. Granted, the general subject doesn't come up in conversation much, but when it does I've never noticed anyone get uncomfortable with it; everyone does it, so what's the big deal?

I'm fairly certain that a lot of the 'social taboo' surrounding masturbation comes from religion. Many different religions teach that masturbatio is wrong and shouldn't be done, take this genius piece of religious writting for example:
