Cythera X Yep, I'm sure it's been beaten to death, but some questions...

Ok. I was recently seized upon by a sudden and unexplainable urge to play Cythera. But obviously since I'm running the latest version, I can't. We don't even have OS9 installed on our computer to boot under Classic anymore, and I'm sure my dad wouldn't want to reinstall OS9 for any reason, although we do still have all the CDs, etc. So I found a few oldish topics about beta testing a Carbon, or X port, but they didn't seem to go anywhere, and I can't find anything on the internet. There was one which had a fairly frustrating screenshot of Cythera running on Andrew Welch's computer in X. Lucky butt...

Anyway, enough beating around the bush. The point is this.

I want to play Cythera again.
I can think of no way to do it right now.
Is there any way I can do it?

Thanks in advance homies.

Edit: Here's the link to that topic.

I miss that topic, it brought hope then slowly pullled it away... Some say you can still hear the chains jingling off into the distance...

Anyways we have been talking about this alot. You might want to check out sheep shaver, it runs cythera:
http://www.ambrosiasw.com/forums/index.php...t=0&start=0

Many people (like myself) would love to see a CytheraX (or a FerazelX for that matter) but I doubt it's going to happen.

Chances of Carbon or sequel:
1st Cythera
2nd PoG & CS
3rd Ferazel's Wand

Cythera might be first but it's still not saying much.

I hate to be a downer so here's a joke:
There once was a man in a bucket,
who stubbed his left foot on a trumpet.
He couldn't find work,
because he was hurt,
and so told the tax man to shove it.

I read about sheep shaver... don't you need OS9 installed to use it for this? I dunno... maybe I just misinterpreted.

BTW thanks for that limeric there, that almost makes up for it. Except one thing. I still can't play Cythera yet... :P

Maybe I'll just buy some run-down piece of crap using OS8 from the school or something... just so I can play all the classics... Chiral, EVC, Cythera, Farazel, Harry, Ares... good times...

I'm a bit surprised you ranked Ferazel below Coldstone.

Has there been a lot of conversation around Ferazel X? I liked the game but never enough to register (at the time I played it I was probably around 9 or 10 with a limited budget) Anyway if there are any new developments, please tell me :P

I ranked Cythera the highest because of the little work done on an OSX version, I ranked PoG next because they have been working on it (eledgidly), and I ranked Ferazel last because of the bad relationship ASW has with Ben Spees and the fact that Aquaria is coming out, oh and also Ben Spees has the code of the game and ASW has the lisence.

There is an old topic on the Ferazel forums about a Ferazel X, there's no hope really since Ben Spees and ASW aren't on speaking terms, Classic can't run the app worth a damn, and for some reason it won't work in sheepshaver (the only good OS9 emulator I've heard of).

For a long time Ben Spees had a forum up called the Metaphorum. He took it down recently due to that fact that his band, Electric Doormatt was doing so well. On the forum he talked about making a semi-sequel to Ferazel but because ASW had the lisense he was calling it "Refazel" (pronounced Re-fay-zall). It was cool for a while people talked about Ideas and at one point there were even some sketches of the monsters he was going to use. But things took a dive and Refazel got into a pickle, and eventulay Ben took down the forums because his band needed more attention. He's on iTune if you wanna hear him.

Ferazel Is one of the best games I've ever had the pleasure of playing. Though most of the community is dead I'm still creating my own level set for it, if you ever buy ferazel and would like to play it, look over into the Ferazel webboard.

I didn't know about the bad relationship, but I'd still put it at #2.

The company that created Coldstone pretty much abandoned it and ceased communication with andrew. About a year or two ago, they even got absorbed into another company, so now the licensing is even tricker. Yes, from time to time people have worked on it in-house, but the code is kind of a mess, enough so that it usually gets put off because it requires such a massive amount of effort to fix.

(by the way, if for whatever reason someone finds this from a search engine or whatever, I am not an Ambrosia employee and my views do not necessarily represent theirs)

They're all rated the same: undefined. None of these will see carbonisation. The effort of turning a 9-and-under game into X is incredible, and the payoff is low. Just thank your lucky stars they made a Universal version of pop-pop.

I'd have to say the one in the worst situation is PoG ad CS. I'm satisfied with Ferazel and Cythera mainly because your actually able to play them, but with PoG & CS they're playable to a certain extent but not registerable. A topic that has been greatly discussed in the Cold Stone forums.

I may treat games differently than other people (wich you may know if you play my level-set) but it's sometimes good to remember that these are just games. Yes knowing ambrosia they're probally fun, but to bad you can't play them. The most we can do is hope for the best and bide our time untill ASW comes out with the next best thing. Aquaria is on the horizon and I'm sure another RPG is around the corner.

Yeah I just dunno about a new RPG that could ever be as good as Cythera haha. I wonder if there's any way to get the beta or whatever form the X version is in right now, even if it's not on the market... anyway. I dunno... I still think if they bothered to make Apeiron X and Bubble Trouble X they would have some success with Cythera X, but I'm no expert.

Until further notice, it looks like my best chance of playing is to either

a - convince my dad to let my put OS9 back on our compy and get sheepshaver
B - use some crappy computer that I can pick up for $50 but will run OS8 +

?

Bubble Trouble and Aperion are much simpler games (code wise) compared to Cythera. Not to mention Cythera's code editor is a hellish nightmare so I've heard.

Best chance would be option A, if you really feel like it go to option B. I've had my G4 tower (OS9.1) for like 6-8 years now and I'm useing it to write this post, useing it edit my level set, as well as play all the classic games. It still runs fine except for when you start it up the first app you open unexpectally quits and you can't use that app for the reminder of time the comp is on, and the occasional freezes when loading complex (up-to-date) internet sites. I'm glad the ASW forums support older computers. :P

Why do people through away their older comps? (Answers & stories?)

Where would you store it? Is it worth keeping around a large object simply so you can play a handful of games, especially when emulators can let you use the machine you replaced it with? Also, perhaps the older machine stopped functioning as well as it used to.

Well I gues it was good to keep the old timer in my family since I have 3 other siblings all wanting to have access to the internet.

As far as I know, the only way to play Cythera in OS X is to use SheepShaver.
Long Live Cythera! Long Live the Cythera Web Board!

Intel, because if you have a PowerPC OS X you can play it on Classic even if it's buggy or reboot in OS 9 even if it crashes every time you enter/leave a port.

Welcome to the Cythera web board, TealSabre! If you already have the OS 9 install discs, I would suggest A, just because Sheepshaver is free. But, there are of course advantages to buying an old computer. One of them being that you can play the games that don't run in Sheepshaver, such as Ferazel.
