you don't know how happy this makes me
I started playing Cythera when I was like 12. I got it off a demo CD my dad's friend let me borrow. Since it was only a demo there were a few things I couldn't do and that got really annoying...also the fact that every few minutes one of the characters would tell me I should register the game.
It's my favorite game ever, so I definitely planned on registering. I just had to wait until I was old enough to do it myself and not have to ask my parents. Unfortunately one day my dad decided to wipe the entire hard drive of our imac, completely erasing any and all traces of my beloved game. He said he erased everything so he could upgrade to OSX...and I suppose he did because when I tried to find the game online to download it again, it wouldn't work.
So I'm extremely bummed...it's been probably 6 years since I've played. I've tried to find ways of getting it again but as far as I know it only works on older macs.
I have my own computer now but it's a PC
and the only 2 other computers in my house are OSX macs
so I'm just kind of wondering if there's any possible way I could get this game again other than going out and freakin buying a compatible mac
because I just might end up doing that...stupid as it sounds
I just really love this game
anyway...aside from my misery, it's really great to see a bunch of Cythera fans
*much love*

Instructions are in the first post, and the next couple pages are mostly discussion. Also you don't have to go out and buy a new computer, just go out and buy an OS9 installer disk and install Classic on to your G5 unit and you can play Cythera, though I hear it gets laggy.
Anyways, welcome to the boards! (Wipe your feet at the door.)

awesome, thanks so much
I'll have to see if I can get a computer savvy friend of mine to help me with that.
It's been a while since I've fiddled with macs.
There is hope!
Thanks to everyone for welcoming me and being so nice and helpful

the computer is driving me crazy
supposedly Cythera can run on a mac from like 7.5 to like 9.6, or so I read
my ibook is definitely 9.2
it used to be 9.0 but my dad upgraded it and that's when everything got messed up and I lost all my stuff
I had tried to re-download the game off the Ambrosia website but it wouldn't open once it was downloaded.
that mac no longer has internet so we downloaded the game onto a disk and put it in the mac and tried to open it, only it says the folder is locked so the stuffit expander thing can't open it
my friend told me the problem was that it was downloaded on a pc and that for it to work I need to get internet on the mac and download it straight from there...I just don't understand why all these complications are happening, it's really frustrating...I just want to play my friggin game!
oh well, I still haven't given up...
thanks to everyone for all the help and advice
I'll get this game if it's the last thing I do

There are some downloads for the game on there, complete as well as seperate. (I think)
---
https://secure.ambro...w.com/index.php
Scroll down to see an, "AmbrosiaSW DVD". This contains the Cythera demo as well as other goodies, (wich I guess can be counted as Cythera collector items.)
---
If the above two don't work, then as a last resort I guess you could look for a really old game advertising site that still has the Cythera demo download on it. (Though I doubt it will work.)
Good luck!
Edit: I'm running my Cythera application off of OS9.1, if that helps at all.

I'm pleased to say that last night I finally got Cythera installed in my OS 9.2 mac!
Apparently the reason why the one I burned from my PC onto a disk wouldn't open on the mac was because I was trying to open it from it's folder on the cd. Turns out all I had to do was drag it out onto the desktop to copy it and open it from there >.< I felt pretty stupid, haha
anyway so my torment is over! Thanks for being so helpful
Now I can finally play the game in it's entirety [since I've registered it]
now I'm wondering...has anyone here beat the entire game? is it possible? are there add-ons for it?
just wondering
thanks again for all your help Jacks
and to everyone else too <3

I just tried out "Magpie's Pumpkin Patch" last night, it was fun. All plants are turned into pumpkins and all the tree go into the fall season. There are some other add-ons to like the one the changes your comp to be more Cythera-like. Just check out the add-ons page. I haven't beaten the game (yet) mainly because my little brother ruined the ending for me, but you defanitly can beat it. Besides, I doubt ASW would put out an incomplete game.
Have you played any other ASW perhaps Ferazel's Wand? If so, allow me to selfishly plug my level set for Ferazel's Wand here:

Like living? Then you'll love FERAZEL'S WAND!!!!
Anyways have fun playing Cythera,

sounds interesting.
I'll have to check it out
I was wondering about something though. This is a problem I ran into before when I had Cythera the first time. Only it didn't happen until near around the time right before my hard drive got erased.
Cythera just quits out of nowhere. It would get really frustrating to lose all my work so I'd save often. But then it was like after the 2nd or 3rd time I saved, it would quit. An error message would come up, Something about memory or whatever. This time I figured maybe I should try running it at the slower setting. But that didn't seem to make a difference.
If I save constantly, on my 2nd or 3rd save it will quit [luckily my work will still be saved]
sometimes it'll freeze and I have to restart my computer. And sometimes It will just quit out of nowhere.
I'm pretty much sure a lot of my problems probably lie within my own computer. I plan on getting it checked [though it's hard to say when that can happen because pretty much nobody knows anything about macs], but I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and maybe it has something to do with the game itself.
Doesn't bother me too much though. It just means a lot of stop and go for me. I love that game so it's worth it.
meanwhile I've been looking through the other topics, finding interesting things I never knew before.

crazy!
well...I decided to read the error message carefully this time instead of just closing it right away, lol. It said something about allocating more memory to the program....now...I don't know quite how to do that....but I went to my control panel and then to memory and put it at the highest setting.
It hasn't froze on me or unexpectedly quit since I did that....yet
however it still only lets me save a couple times before quitting. *shrug*

I did the info command on the Cythera icon and went to memory
It shows 2 boxes where I can fill something in
they say:
Minimum size: 10240k
Preferred size: 12288k
am I supposed to change one of those maybe?

I too used to have the memory-allocation error. I think that increasing the memory allocation mostly solved it.

I'm not sure if you did get this figured out yet or not, but yes, ideally, you should raise both of them. I've experienced that same problem during saving many, many times. You have to put a ton of RAM into it to make it not crash.
And then, when I upgraded to OS 9, I no longer had that problem, but the game started going black after going into/ leaving a place. These are pretty common bugs from what I've seen. Surprisingly, the number of crashes like this seem significantly reduced in Sheepshaver. That's probably because it's on Mac OS 8.6, though. Cythera seems to run much more stably on OS 8 than 9. Hope that puts your mind at ease.
