A big, big slob, but I have my excuses:

1. Girlfriend
2. Homework
3. Skyrocketing phone bill

Sorry, but I'll try to come here at least when I'm at my iMac at school... it's just been a lot of things to do lately...

Rats, I guess we failed then, Ody. Posted Image

Ok enough of us exist, I guess we just need something for idle banter to keep interest (as opposed to the TSes which sometimes can take lots of inspiration/time to do something of quality)

It seems, sadly, that everyone is involved in acedemics of some sort, I too have been increasingly busy, but I just haven't shown it yet. I did come up with a few more ideas for chronicles, but unfortunately they have nothing in common with Cythera. Posted Image

Actually, no. "Spam" is a terrible invention, gives you upset stomachs and the like. I was referring to relating mundane life experiences or whatever you were thinking about at the time. You know, "idle banter." Posted Image

I'm here too! Posted Image I haven't died yet!

But I, too, have been rather busy- new semester, and severely lacking ideas. School drains my creativity. ;) I will try and post tomorrow, since it's Friday...right now I have about 5 minutes and then off to do homework. *sigh*

Idle banter is a good idea, though- something where we can post quickly and not need inspiration. I, for one, always end up wriitng extra-long posts...:P;;;

Well, I could always bring up the word game. Very short posting- one word per post! Posted Image

Okay then.

(1) My Hamster Bit me a few days ago. It hurt.

(2) (This is a question for cache, but if anyone else knows, they can answer.)
Why are New Zealanders somtimes called 'Kiwis'?

This came up a couple days ago, and It got me wondering...
Isn't there a bird called a Kiwi? It is also a kind of tasty fruit...

New Zealanders are called 'Kiwis' because the Kiwi is our national bird. We even use it as the identification mark on the planes in our air-force (what there is left of it Posted Image ). Since the Kiwi lives only in New Zealand, the 'nickname' seems appropriate to us.

<rant>
Oh, and as for the fruit, that seems to be a common mistake you yanks make: there is no fruit called the kiwi, it's kiwifruit, one word! Hmph, the idea, eating our national bird! Don't you know it's an endangered species!? Um, on second thoughts, you probably didn't. Posted Image

Anyway, now that you all know better, I don't want to hear any of you talking about 'kiwi dessert' again, ya hear!? Posted Image
</rant>

OK Bryce, did that answer your questions?

Speaking of eating national birds, Ben Franklin wanted to make the U.S. national bird the turkey. Go figure!

Oh, one thing - I DID know the Kiwi is endangered.
Thanks for enlighting me on the origin of the nickname, though.

I like kiwifruit. I also like kiwi birds, but not to eat. :P I knew, too, that kiwis were endangered. Whaddya think I am, an American? Posted Image

Hmm, you want odd, you say? How about a lesson in New Zealand fauna, then? Posted Image

We're quite proud of all our unique species here in NZ, especially the birds. NZ has no native mammals or marsupials - unless you count the migrating seals and dolphins - so birds have occupied most of their ecological niches.

First and foremost, there's the Kiwi, of course. Then there's the Kakapo, Weka, Tui, and Kea (the world's largest parrot.) That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but there's more.

On the extinct side, there was the New Zealand Black Eagle (the world's largest eagle), and the Moa (the world's largest bird, period!)

Most of these species have been in decline since humans arrived. The Maori hunted the Moa to extinction long before the europeans arrived, and their kuri (dogs) weren't exactly good for the native wildlife, either. There's also a suggestion from recent studies that they were responsible for the introduction of the black rat.

Then the europeans came, and the fun really started. They accidentally introduced the european brown rat, compared to which the effects of the black rat pale. Then they started doing stupid things like introducing rabbits (which are destroying our farmland); opossums (which are destroying our native bush); ferrets, stoats, weasels and, worst of all, feral cats, which are destroying our native birdlife.

There's a big effort underway by our Department of Conservation (DOC) to create cat-free zones of native bush, to try and encourage the growth in numbers of many of the most desperate species - including the Kiwi.

OK, was that odd enough for you? Posted Image

I've heard of the Kea parrot, but most of those other birds are new to me. Thanks for the info.

[edit] cache just pointed out a mistake in my math...it's changed now. Posted Image
[/edit]

Odd? What do you mean, odd? That was perfectly normal! Posted Image What's -really- odd is how 0.999 etc. can equal 1... Posted Image

It's true, really- just goes to show how gibbled math is.

Ok, if you have 1 ninth, it equals 0.111 etc. 2 ninths equals 0.222 etc. 3 ninths equals 0.333 etc, and so on. And in that case, 9 ninths equals 0.999 etc. But 9 ninths is a whole! Therefore, 0.999 etc. equals 1.

Told you so. :P
