Or so I assume.

Today when I was checking my e-mail, I found this conspicuously near the top, and in all caps at that.

This e-mail makes no sense to me. In Europe, do they put the day before the month (example DD/MM/YYYY)? I'm assuming this is spam, so I'm not going to reply to it or look at the website, but I'd like your opinions.

I've never heard of this group, either. Has anyone here heard of it?

I must be fodder for strange e-mails or something...

Ah. Thank you. A friend of mine here at work agrees. He theorized that the person(s) who sent it to me are thinking that if their name spreads, the group that provides them online service will give them free hosting or something along those lines.

Again, thanks.

I was looking at my G Mail account today, an account I haven't used, and haven't even told anyone it exists. I logeed in today to find that I have got 24 spam messages in the last 30 days. Impressive, no?

To the best of my knowledge, America is the only country in the world not to put the day before the month in numerical dating, and (along with Zimbabwe), the only country to cling to the archaic imperial system. Perhaps those Europeans aren't so crazy after all...

Actually we don't cling. We constantly reinvent the world. Meanwhile the europeans are trying to convert our accomplishment into metric. :P

Actually, I almost never get spam. Then again, I only use my email for personal, person to person chats.

How is Imperial not archaic? And how does it make more sense to have people worrying about learning the random patterns of how many feet in a mile, etc.? Not to mention that the scientific community operates in SI units, and having scientists and related folks converting from SI to Imperial is fraught with possible pitfalls.

Or is it a sign of Americans' greater intelligence that they know how many feet are in a mile, and how many ounces in a gallon, rather than having an intuitive system that's easy to figure out? ;)

Wow. I wish my e-mail stats could be that impressive...

..but then again, I have 300 unread e-mails because of the Apple SciTech mailing list...

Does anyone here read MacAddict? And if so, do you remember which issue it was that Rik Myslewski talked about spam in his Editor's letter? I think it was a 2002 issue, but I don't remember which one...it was funny, though.

I've had a yahoo account from 1997 that I foolishly gave out way too much. Still, I only get about 150 spam mails per month, some of which are from some math teacher who insists I'm in her class <- I've never heard of her before.

Moon: Yep.

TheJournalist: No, I don't. My membership has been rather sporadic over the past nine years or so (I've been subscribing on and off since the second issue). Could you be so kind as to point out which issue this is to me? Perhap I have it and just don't know.

Avatara: Really? I'll have to check on that.

Has anyone here met a real-life spammer? And laughed at them, or something like that? I haven't, so I was wondering if anyone has.

Well, at least you're not getting e-mails concerning requests for assistance from Liberians or South Africans who all want entry to the U.S... And who all seem conspicuously wealthy. It's annoying that spammers don't realize certain things are giving it away before we read it:

1. It is declaring us a 'winner.' We all know that everyone on the internet hates each other's guts.

2. Using all Caps-lock is usually reserved for out-of-hand arguments on AIM.

3. Freakishly odd e-mail addresses that always seem to be terminated three days after they send you the message.

An example:

DEER SIR,

It is my most pleasure to inform you that you have won an improbable amount of money in a contest you never weere a participant in. Your prize money amounts to 500,000 British pounds. Please give us your name, home/cell telephone numbers, your home address, and the contacts of any of your business associates.

Beh. I'm a scientist, and I talk about pints of milk, my weight in stone, my height in feet and inches, and the ditance to uni in miles (all one of them). I mean, I'd far rather drink 2 pints of milk, weigh 13 stone, be 6'1" tall, and walk a mile to uni every morning... than drink 1.136L, weigh 82kg, be 185.42cm tall, and walk 1.614km to uni. If anything, it makes for nicer numbers.
Yup, I was a fish out of water in Canada this summer - "look, a speed limit of 90... no... wait. OK, no wonder this damn country seems so big". I mean, hell, if you're going to go all metric on us, why not adopt metric time... I mean, conventional time has factors of 60, 60, 24, 7, and 365/366. That's way too complicated for people who don't understand 16oz/1lb, 14lb/1st...

:P

I'm a Brit. We invented Imperial here (hence the name, dammit), and I'm not going to use this stupid 'metric' stuff unless I'm forced to.

We use an interesting combination of the two at work, can get very annoying. But it is true, some things seem better measured in imperial.

That said, it sucks in its use of bases. Base 12 is horrible, but its not even like it's all base 12, you've got base 14, base 16 and I'm sure soemthing is base 17. All of which are just a pain to work in. I just dislike having to remember one system for one unit, and another for another. Makes conversion a pain...
