As my produce guy says it, a kiwi and kiwifruit are both proper singular forms for the oblong, brown, fuzzy fruit. A kiwifruit farmer will always claim that the plural of "kiwi/kiwifruit" is "kiwifruit" and not "kiwifruits." My grocery store sells either 10 kiwis or 10 kiwi fruits for a dollar, I've never seen anyone write kiwifruit on an "As Advertised" sign, and the UCFW wouldn't stand for you saying that every produce guy in the nation is wrong.
