Maybe the replacement to these forums will help
This is an trimmed version of a recent ev3 coversation:
Maybe our resident mods can elaborate?

<moki> hehe, Cham added himself as moderator just as I did
<Chamrin> hehe
<Chamrin> yeah
<moki> phpBB is pretty lame, IMHO, Oscar
<Chamrin> I'm assuming all accounts now will be deleted and the old ones used
<Chamrin> so shouldn't matter Posted Image
<moki> cham, did you see how many options that thing has? It's amazing
<Oscar> so data can be posted directly into the forum by admins of sections of the site
<moki> and set exactly what various moderators can/can't do -- the warn system keeps a record
<Chamrin> yeah, will take me forever to look through it all
<moki> moderators can ban people
<moki> all sorts of wild stuff, and that's just on the admin end
<Chamrin> with the logging, you can let us ban people :P
<moki> we've set up a few "playgrounds" for the moderators
<Chamrin> not that I've ever banned anyone besides a spammer once
<moki> Cham: look at all of the options... looks amazing
<moki> it also has users and groups, ranks, all sorts of good stuff
<moki> uploading of pictures
<moki> this is a pre-final version of InvisionBB 2.0
<Oscar> Programmability is the big thing for us; and accessibility to the dbase by outside scripts
<moki> Oscar: it's just php and mysql
<Chamrin> Bah!
<Chamrin> it capitalized my words
<moki> you can probably hack it all you want, but that may suck when it comes time to upgrade
<Chamrin> in the topic name
<Oscar> Yeah
<Chamrin> EVIL ;)
<moki> hehehe
<Oscar> hehe
<Chamrin> that MUST be fixed B)
<Chamrin> ooh, it has "recently read topics"
<Chamrin> no long will I have to go hunting for things I read
<Oscar> heh, ubb's a dinosaur because it lacks things like that
<moki> oh my god, but the moderation options rock
<Oscar> at least, thats what a rank system means on the systems i've used
<Oscar> You get different titles for different ranks
<moki> and it lets you choose how to view the BB -- did you see that, cham?
<Steelix> I think that would cause conflict, and spam.
<Oscar> like 'noob', 'user', 'geek' etc
<Chamrin> where is that?
<Oscar> It hasn't caused any issues other than mild amusement on the boards I use that have ranks.
<moki> the low-fi version is pretty spiff too
<Steelix> Hrm...
<Chamrin> you can track topics/forums
<Myriad> Something new and fancy?
<Chamrin> that's nice too
<moki> ooooh, it lets you change your email address, and IGNORE users
<Oscar> ignore? awesome
<Naman> Oooh. Ignore.
<Steelix> moki: Ignore users?!?!
<Steelix> Excellent!
* Naman drools.
<moki> can set your time zone
<Oscar> steelix, you're so ignored Posted Image
<fiyin> moki, didn't you say something about it stripping excess punctuation too?
<moki> can choose basically every option you want, on a per-user basis
<moki> fiyin: yep, that too
* fiyin eyes Steelix
<fiyin> :-P
<moki> "Do you wish to view members avatars when reading topics?"
<moki> "Do you wish to view images in posts, such as smilies and posted images?"
<moki> "Do you wish to view members signatures when reading topics?"
<moki> "Number of posts to show for each topic page"
<moki> all sorts of stuff
<moki> you can set your time zone too Posted Image
<Oscar> moki, does it handle daylight savings?
<Chamrin> Sweet, you can quote multiple replies at once
<Chamrin> just select the ones you want to quote
<Oscar> phpbb doesn't at the current version and it really pisses me off
<Chamrin> and then hit reply
<Chamrin> and it quotes them ALL
<moki> a topic subscription manager
<moki> private messages
<moki> attachments
<moki> yummy
<Oscar> subscription? o.o
<Chamrin> merge posts Posted Image
* Steelix replaces his pants
<Kirk> Oscar, it's like watching a topic for replies
<Oscar> Does it have split topics?
<moki> yeah cham
<Oscar> That's REALLY handy
<moki> and it lets you have a buddy list
<Oscar> when a topic diverges
<Steelix> Split topics?
<Oscar> YEah, so you can split a topic in half, put certain posts in certain topics...
<Kirk> moki, two words- GET IT
<Chamrin> bah soviet mikee was smarter than me
<Chamrin> he made himself admin ;)
<Kirk> Okay....we are still discussing the new system
<Chamrin> moki, there's an admin option for "Topic Multi-Moderation" looks like you can simplify archiving things
<Chamrin> does multiple actions at once
<moki> Cham, the admin options look plain dreamy
<Chamrin> yeah, it'll be funny when you get drunk
<Chamrin> so much for you to mess with Posted Image
<moki> heh
<moki> have you figured out how to set the forum view style on a per-user basis?
<moki> or is that something that has to be set on a global level?

<moki> the admin setting seemed to imply you could set a default, but users could override it
<Trah> so, is this new, high-tech board the future of ASW?
<Kirk> Look like it, Trah
<Trah> cool Posted Image

That sounds an aweful like the new version of PhpBB. Are they going to replace the forums with that?

My lips are sealed.

But incidentally, if you want to quickly render any message board meaningless, give word censor access to a group of twenty people.

As andrew said above, it is a "pre-final version of InvisionBB 2.0." From what I've read about it, it sounds good (I hope that it will still work with WebTV in its final ASW incarnation, I'm crossing my fingers).

If that alone isn't bad enough, give those twenty people admin access.

Invision's mod features are much cooler than PHPBB. We're testing both. Invision outsocks PHP by a light year.

From what I've seen elsewhere, the exact opposite is true (at least in my opinion). I still, however, prefer the simple dignity of the our little Infopop UBB setup here to anything else, and will miss it when it's gone. Oh well, onward and upward I suppose.

This board is just too inefficent in regards to scalability. I believe it has something to do with the way this board lumps data into a few files, rather than ordering it neatly.
