People do have the ability to subject their own will to that of a group and become to an extent, just part of a larger group mind. This can happen with any cause. At least where I am, I can count on one hand the number of people I know who were in favor of going to war, and when I was at Berkeley, I was told that a majority of them supported it.
People aren't necessarily losing their individuality, but the Media would sure like to take it from them.
