Wow, this topic was actually a somewhat good discussion.

I also feel that people are way too scared of anything even slightly related to sex. I go to a highly religious school (I am one of 2 athiests there, I think. About 400 people total), and masturbation is absolutely taboo and people appear to be terrified of it. I think they're all mental.

I think it really depends on where you are and with what group you are dealing. It doesn't surprise me that in a religious school you will find a great number of folks who outwardly are absolutely terrified of anything sexual (I refuse to believe that amongst any group, including the hardcore christian cultural war types, any variety of pervasive sexual phobia exists to any deep level that can't be overcome pretty easily), but amongst my compadres just about any topic is open for conversation and we'd probably just bulldoze over anyone who wanted to speak out to limit conversation. I wouldn't want to bet that my bunch is so enlightened to allow for someone to just whip it out and start mastrubating in the middle of dinner or something (although I'm sure that at least a couple of us wouldn't mind), but sexual subjects don't really scare anyone off. Something I imagine to be true of a great many folks kicking around.

Well, its not that people don't want to talk about it, they just don't feel comfortable talking about it with others. Make the first move. Yell out "MASTURBATE!" in the middle of an assebly. I find that the better people know each other, the more likely they are to talk about it.

Just because they are outwardly scared, doesn't mean they're not all doing it.

Indeed. However, it might also mean that they hate themselves for doing it, which is no good for anything.

You should always hate yourself. How else will you strive to improve? Hate from other people is generally ignored, so where does that hateful pressure come from?

I'm pretty sure hating yourself just starts a viscious cycle. (And I'm not talking the kind you ride into town)

Love yourself and you turn out better. Methinks.

I'm sure you can find some study that shows masturbating lowers the risk or testicular cancer.

Prostate cancer, and it's any sort of ejaculation, not just from masturbation.

Of course, you'll have to put yourself through the incredible hardship of doing around 21 times a month to receive any sort of benefit. :P

I think that most, if not all, of the reasons for doing it could be explained by the medical sciences.
