I wouldn't try them while driving. That would just be a bad idea.

At least, not until I've walked around outside a bit with them.

Why would that be a bad idea? Put them on and if you can see out of them you can drive with them. Additionally, since they're wrap-around you can actually see more while driving as you have the prescription improving your peripheral vision along with just what's in front of you.

But I have heard that you lose prescription sunglasses very quickly. So I say no.

How is it that sunglasses being prescription makes them any more prone to loss? Short of someone breaking into my car and taking my glasses, I can't invision how I would go about losing them. Indeed, I'd think that just the opposite would be true. Most people really would be averse to losing their $300 investment in their prescription sunglasses, so would look after them that much more than their $10 specials from Wal-Mart and, in general, lose them much less frequently.

In any event, I've found that insane coatings on glasses really are worth the extra cash. My regular glasses are Essilor Crizal Alize Next-Gen Transitions with an anti-scratch coating. No reflections, easier to clean, scratch resistant, and change color in the sun. Hell, they're preferable to being able to see without glasses.

Ouch.

Fun! I was exaggerating just a little, though.

Just a little.

Trust me, if you are on a boat and dropped a pair of cheapos to the bottom of the ocean, a diver would come up and say that there's a pair of cheapos floating to the bottom and would like to give them back to the person who has them. If you drop a pair of expensive sunglasses, then get ready to use that big checkbook that you have and buy a pair of new ones. Plus expensive sunglasses scratch more easily.

Also, look at the way they fold. Some will fold so that the supports rub the lens, producing a very scratched patch.

Where are you living? If I dropped a pair of sunglasses to the bottom of the ocean, I would feel pretty safe in betting that there wouldn't be a diver for a thousand miles in any direction, much less any who would bother screwing with getting a pair of sunglasses from the bottom. Secondarily, what the hell could a diver, or anybody other than me, want with a pair of sunglasses in my prescription? Furthermore, is there even such a thing as cheapo prescription sunglasses? I'm thinking that $60 is probably the floor for such things.

Yeah, because they only use the finest european optics and elaborate scratch-resistant coatings on the $5 P.O.S. sunglasses you pick up from Wal Mart. My $400 custom prescription lenses, on the other hand, were made out of tinted packing tape and the sides of Windex bottles that scratch if you look at them funny.
