It's just that logos are supposed to be small, simple things. The original Apple Computer logo was (if I can trust my source) Newton under an apple tree with the words "Apple Computer" on the bottom of it. Needless to say, it wouldn't work so well in an area smaller than a postcard.

Exactly, logos need to be simple (relatively) things that people can draw easily (most big companies have simple logos because they're easy to remember). Otherwise, if its a horrid complex thing, nobody would use it.
