Meh. I completely disagree. No matter what a person does to their body, some will be pleased, and some won't. And the only opinion that truly matters is your own. If you want to do it, do it. Although sober reflection is a good thing, as SA points out. Don't do it because someone else wants you to, and don't NOT do it because some people don't like it. As for the damage to the teeth thing, listen to Pike and ask either of the people who might actually know. Heck, ask your dentist. I can see that as being logical, but I've never heard it before from any of my friends who have lip piercings.

A lesson in how society works - whether you want it to or not:

Welcome to stereotypes:

Man A walks into office and drops off resume - business suit, clean cut; looks like an able bodied fellow.

Man B walks into office and drops off resume - perhaps the same haircut, same suit and identical in all but one way - one very large bar protruding out just below his bottom lip.

Now, as the manager of this corporation, having just seen these 2 fellows, who do you think you would be calling for an interview? Perhaps Man B is the man for the job, all the skills, experience and knowledge required. Problem is, because of that piece of steel in his face, he won't be getting the job.

Now allow me to expand - parents of prospective girlfreinds, teachers - anyone you run into - all of them will now have a slant on you (unfairly I might add) that puts you into a certain group, a certain category. They will size you up, break you down and package you away into some stereotype within the first three seconds of seeing your newfound adornment. I'm not saying it's fair, I'm saying that's how it works.

Think it over carefully before brazenly revealing the new statement that defines you as a person - perhaps it's a definition that you don't want others mis-reading.

Your definition of "a total ass" seems to be against some people's opinions. Now, generally your response to this is "that person is an idiot." Or just maybe they have different tastes than you.

That is, in some ways, a shame. It is always a shame when we let society dictate how we should use our bodies. That same desire to look the right way so society will be pleased is what leads to anorexia, after all. Besides which, the society in question is really mostly the USA. Come to Canada - there is a steadily growing level of tolerance for body mods up here, and Europe is generally a more tolerant place, too.

Perhaps society will change. In a decade, look at the tolerence society has grown for swearing. Late 80s, they had to censor quite a few words. Now, you can turn on Star Trek and see someone yelling "You son of a bitch!"

Though you're still more likely to hear someone yelling "We need to recalibrate the frequency modulators on the matrix reticulation field generator!"

That came out of nowhere. It's just the fact that you can say that stuff now. I am going to grow up, have kids, and have them talk that way. And it'll be a part of their everyday vocabulary. I don't like that.

Okay, question for you. I've seen that stuff before, but I'm not quite sure what it means or when to use it. How do you determine whether to use -san, -kun, or nothing at all? And what do they mean?

-san is an honorific which means something similar to our "Mr" or "Mrs". -kun is used for young boys, while -chan is used for children (apparently of both genders).

-sama is somthing refering you close to a god-like figure. A diamyo or Shogun would have -sama at the end of their name. As would a president. Its the highest honor in language you can receive in the Japanese language. Well actually, Kami-sama is. But whatever....
