May I point out one small thing about Planetarion?
They've had to do a ton of work revising ship classes to get them to work - to prevent a pair or triplet of ship classes from being all-powerful. So the end result is either
a) the best kind of fleet is one that contains all types of ships, or
they fail and three quarters of the ships are never used.
I don't see how having a small number of ships is a bad thing. It allows you to manage a fleet more efficiently and _doesn't_ take away strategy - because if more than 3 ship classes are prominent, _all_ of them are.
