Cool bands

I've run across some pretty neat bands of late, and couldn't help but talk about them. If you've got some cool bands you wann mention, post away.

The Benjamin Gate: These guys are awesome!! Not like your usual rock band. They have some really cool guitar stuff happening, and their singer has a really cool voice. I met her actually at a concert recently… I have to admit she was pretty cute. And I got a picture of her, the band's bass player (I think), and I too! Rock on. Posted Image Sorry, I fell for her. lol.

Earthsuit: Talk about a weird band. This one is way out in the deep end. They've got lots of computer synthesizing in their music, which is really cool. The lead singer also has a high pitched voice of sorts, giving their songs a really weird sound. They even have some punk/rap stuff happening on some tracks.

Pillar: This is just a heavy punk/rap band. They don't have any special style like The Benjamin Gate or Earthsuit, they just have some really cool guitar parts.

Also, all three of these bands are Christian, so they have no swearing/profanity and such (although I do question Pillar a bit. They seem to swear on one track, but the words are in the backround of the music so I can't tell. I would be dissapointed to find that it was swearing, but I'll live with it).

Here are their websites (I highly recommend Earthuit's and The Benjamin Gate's): www.thebenjamingate.com www.earthsuit.com www.pillarmusic.com

Let me list the bands that I know that are really cool...

Dave Matthews Band
R.E.M.
Rush
Pain of Salvation
Dreamtheater
Skyclad
Queensryche
Marillion
Fates Warning
Liquid Tension Experiment
Transatlantic
Yes
Steve Vai

Hmm, am I missing any? Most of those are Prog (progressive) bands, and for the most part fairly underground. R.E.M. and DMB aren't prog, but they're still really good. Especially Automatic For the People. That CD is absolutly beautiful. I doubt anyone has really heard of many of these bands. Though, check out www.fateswarning.com and visit the webboard there. Any question about music can be answered there.

A few of my current favourites:

A Perfect Circle
Filter
Massive Attack
Metallica
Shihad
Tadpole

There are others, of course, but those are off the top of my head.

Oh, there's one I missed. P.O.D. (Stands for payable on death) They are your usual Christian punk band, except for the fact they are amazingly good. The music is very "in your face", but the lyrics have a very poetic feel to them. You also have to know your scripture to understand what they're talking about. www.payableondeath.com

I have a question, El Spamo. What is a progressive rock band? Please excuse my stupidity, I never pay attention to those sort of things.

Whoa... I could understand some of the smaller underground type bands, but you've never heard of any of these? Tool, Metallica, R.E.M, Yes, Nine Inch Nails, Dave Mathews Band, none of these ring a bell?

I've heard of Metallica, R.E.M., Nine Inch Nails, but I've never actually listened to them.

Really, you've never heard REM avatara? You're definitly being deprived there.

Skippy: A proggressive (prog) band is basically a band that is more or less an underground band that tends to be ignored by pop. Many of the newer movements come from their realm, hence the "progressive" name. Also, it is because they do a great deal of experimentation with musical styles and mixing of genres. Within prog itself, there is Prog Rock, Prog metal, and plain Prog which includes all the stuff that you really can't define anywhere else (ie Chroma Key).

Sarg, I agree with you with Tool. That CD is currently kicking my a$$. Though I'm thinking of going on a Skyclad kick now... heh.

np: Ants Marching, DMB

Hang on a second here, we have Tool fans who aren't A Perfect Circle fans? You guys do know it's the creation of Maynard James Keenan, right?

And if you haven't actually listened to Metallica, REM, etc, try to find some and do so. Try A Perfect Circle as well, the site has some of their music videos on it.

In case you haven't noticed, I'm rather a fan of theirs. Posted Image

A Perfecf Circle was one of my favorites until I played the CD to death. Right now I'm just sort of tired of them.

*Nod* That explains things. Mer de Noms is getting a bit old. Well, hopefully the new CD will change things, whenever it gets released. And I have heard they're having a song on the Tomb Raider soundtrack.

I have the feeling no one will hear Pappa Roach on an oldies station.
Some of my favourite bands right now are:
Grandaddy
Coldplay
Cat Power
Noumena
The Herbie Nichols Project
Branford Marsalis
Bjork
Nakatomi Plaza

I could go on and on, but I won't. I'm really mostly listening to Grandaddy and Cat Power right now with some Bjork and Joe Henderson mixed in.

Now, which of those do I like

Deep Forest - Yes, good
Nomad - Haven't heard of 'em
Dropkick Murphies - Nor them
Kotoja - Nor them
Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Not my style, really, but kinda cool
Pink Floyd - Mmmmm
The Offspring - Mostly, yes
Godsmack - Good stuff
Weezer - Definitely
The Prodigy - A while back, yes. They've kinda dulled on me though
Garbage - A couple of songs, but I was never really a fan
Chumbawamba - Let me guess- "Tuffthumping", or however it's spelt?
The Verve Pipe - Freshman, yes yes yes. The rest, not too sure
Bloodhound Gang - Funny guys, dem

Yes, forge, you have pretty good musical taste. Though I notice you're not that into heavy stuff.

Yeah, Tubthumping <strokes beard> of course, they used to be really good, circa "Someone's always telling you how to behave" <leans on stick> The only good mainstream song I've heard recently is that new Weezer cover. <leans back in rocking chair> I've never heard of most of those other ones (except REM, etc.) I bought NIN's first album when it came out, and it's probably his best work apart from some songs on the Downward Spiral. Ahh well.

Currently I like Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Super Furry Animals and the Beastie Boys. And Beck, of course.

Alice In Chains (my favorite Seattle band)
Aphex Twin (wacky experimental mayhem of Richard D. James)
Coil (avant garde, some of the most inspirational musick ever made)
Dead Voices on Air (dark ambient)
Delerium (ranges from dark ambient to space ambient to world music. If you all are really into the space theme you should check out Spheres and Spheres II)
Depeche Mode (perhaps the best synthpop group of all time)
Download (ambient + techno + industrial= coolest dance music ever)
Front Line Assembly (perhaps my favorite industrial act)
Haujobb (very cool mix of ambient, drum n' bass, and industrial)
Leaether Strip (another one of my favorite industrial bands)
Nine Inch Nails
Numb (combat disco)
Radiohead
Rammstein
Rush
Skinny Puppy (yet another favorite industrial band)
Smashing Pumpkins
:wumpscut: (dark n' aggresive industrial)

No one has mentioned Soundgarden yet. They are (or were, as it is) easily the most underappreciated band on the market.
