Amazing chapter! I can finally see Kateiko becoming an assassin (especially if she gets into a big fight with Tiernan next chapter...). I feel bad for her. Though it is kind of her own fault she's homeless, she could go back to the Rin, or live in Tiernan's old house, or see if Airedain would marry her. Airedain's kind of a jerk, but so far he's taken care of K.
I'm curious about Suriel's plans & how Tiernan plays into them. I never really understood that in DM/OoR.

Our little K is growing up so fast! She even gets her distinctive hairstyle finally in this chapter.

Yeah, she has options, she just doesn't like any of them. She'd feel even more out of place with the Rin than ever and still have the same problems with them she always did. Tiernan's old house has too many memories for her. As for Airedain, well, marrying a self-destructive alcoholic would not be her wisest choice. (I guess technically she could marry him and live in Toel Ginu without him, but that marriage probably wouldn't be sanctioned by Tokoda.)

I think Airedain is one of the most interesting and complex characters I've ever written, even though he didn't exist in my mind until he showed up in chapter 10. He serves as a foil to Iannah, and together they embody a lot of the internal struggles Kako is facing as well as the two opposing worlds she's caught between.
He is a jerk and a sleaze and somewhat prejudiced. He doesn't fit in with viirelei or itherans and doesn't think he ever will, so his dislike of itherans is actually a mirror of what he sees as their dislike for him. He's secretly embarrassed that he's not very educated, is poor and lives in the slums, and doesn't have any other skills besides music. He is quite compassionate and would look out for Kako, but he feels powerless and takes that frustration out on others, so they wouldn't have a very healthy relationship.

I'm not sure ANYONE understood that in DM/OoR.

I enjoy reading Airedain ^_^ He's a lot easier to understand than quiet characters like Tiernan or Maika. Marrying him wouldn't have been my first choice, but since she's joined his destructive lifestyle anyway, maybe the commitment would be a step up. Maybe imposing on her cousin and trying to find a home in Toel Ginu would be a better idea ^_^ I just feel sad for Kako because if DM is any indication, things aren't going to get any better for her :(

After getting some critique, I reworked the fifth scene to give it more weight and just edited my post to include the new version. I also named Airedain's cousin while I was at it. He's Temelin now.

Another well-written chapter . Katerei seems to have something of a penchant for somewhat self-destructive behaviors (i.e. her homeless lifestyle in this case).
If memory serves, alt-Selax learned that alt-Avatara had knowledge (or an ability) that he believed might be useful to him in his quest to reach Cythera. I don't think that it was ever specified what exactly this was, and, due to Selax's interference, alt-Selax never ended up actually needing it.
