Alt-Cythera invented differential gears, yes.

I actually saw this article last week. I hope the salvage reveals more information on the Antikythera Device, but I suppose we'll have to wait and see.

This might also be of interest in this situation.

Awesome! Maybe someone can work this into OoR or Sail? :D

Also, does that video answer the question if how Cythera ought to be pronounced? The same way they said Antikythera?
I'll become even more undignified than this

I doubt the pronunciation is the same, but I'm not an expert in Greek. I'd have to ask my sister.

I can't view the video from here, but I can discuss the pronunciation.

  • In Greek, the spelling is Κύθηρα.
  • In Modern Greek, υ and η are both "i" sounds, and the tonos indicates stress. That makes the pronunciation "KI-thi-ra".
  • In Ancient Greek, υ is a "u" and η is a long "a". Additionally, θ is actually a more forceful "t". So it ends up as "KOO-tay-ra" (stress doesn't really work like that in Ancient Greek, but I don't know enough about Ancient Greek to explain properly).
  • The way we typically pronounce Greek has more to do with the way that the Romans decided to transliterate Greek than the a priori pronunciation. Their spelling is based on pronunciation in-between Ancient and Modern Greek. They added X, Y, and Z to the end of the alphabet to accommodate this—X and Z for sounds that aren't in Latin, and Y because upsilon looked like U but was pronounced like I (the French name for "Y" is still "I Grèque", or "Greek I")
  • The language spoken in Cythera would have split off from Greek before what we call "Ancient Greek"; it would be closer to Mycenaean Greek. I don't really know about that, but scanning the Wikipedia page it seems that some sounds that were later lost in Greek, like h, y, and w, were still around. The letter F actually comes from Greek "di-gamma", which was used for the sound of W before it disappeared from Greek.

If you can read IPA, Κύθηρα's Wiktionary page has a bunch of historical pronunciations.

I don't think I know enough about mechanics or astronomy to fit that in. Also the timeline would be wrong, because Sail takes place after the ancient Greek era but before the Antikythera wreck was discovered.

Well the group in OoR is headed to the cult of Scylla... maybe the boat could have sunk somewhere near there...

Wowev Fiery, that's a much more complicated answer than I was expecting! So we can only guess how game-Cythera is supposed to be pronounced? :\ When did you learn Greek anyway? o_O

I took a semester of Modern Greek in college. I picked up some of the rest through a combination of linguistics courses and explanations in that class of why the pronunciation is so different from how we normally pronounce words from Greek.
