Plans to Save #cythera? Ambrosia IRC is being deactivated

As posted over on the BnB, irc.ambrosia.net is apparently going to be shutdown. I am aware that #cythera is not seeing much activity at the moment, but, given its uses in communicating during more active periods and its role in creating and fostering such periods, I think that it would be prudent to attempt to find some way to save it. I suspect the most plausible method is to find another server and host it there (similar to the approach being used at the moment for #ev3), but I confess to not knowing all that much about irc servers and such.

So, any suggestions on how to save #cythera?

We could just follow what #ev3 does and ask to hijack their server. I mean, it's not like we're a heavy-traffic channel.

I'm connected to #cythera in irc.afternet.org already

I hope 453 fares as well hehe

We're all set up on irc.afternet.org/#cythera (a clickable link exists in the current #cythera topic)

The #ev3 crew seems pretty happy with afternet, along with #ev and a few other channels I don't know. Since some of our users like the other Ambrosia communities, we figured it was easier to just follow them over to afternet.

Now hold on, it's been a long time since I've been to a new server. *Picks up cane and hobbles over*

(Is this a sign that Ambrosia is dying? Are they going to delete our board?)

If they delete this board I'll bug the admins for an IPB export of all the posts, threads and forums made here so we can start a new forum someplace. I'd be heartbroken if this forum got put in a dustbin.

Well, if nothing else, they're not much of a Mac game developer any more. The last Mac game they published that wasn't a port from another platform was Redline (2006). I doubt they're dying, but I assume their income comes primarily from iOS games (HypnoBlocks, Aki Mahjong, Mondo Solitaire) and Mac utilities (Soundboard, Snapz Pro, Wiretap). Certainly, if they were struggling, they wouldn't have twelve people on staff.

Yeah, it seems like they're leaving old technology behind. For instance, the forums are not friendly with my Safari 4.1.3 on a G4.

By the way, here's the deal with services on AfterNET.

You can't register a nick and keep it reserved for yourself. It's just not the way things work there. You can register a channel; we did that already so you don't have to worry about it.

You can register an account. This doesn't reserve your nick, but it's required if you want to be registered with the channel. To do so, "/msg AuthServ REGISTER <account> <password> <email>". "<account>" is some name you pick, which could be the same as your nick. Either you can configure your client to authenticate with AuthServ, or you can set the server password to "/<account>/<password>".

If you don't care about having privileged access in the channel, you don't have to bother.

Should we replace the old, pinned topic?

I'm relieved to see that the situation is in capable hands :) .

I don't think there is a need to replace the old irc topic. I'll probably just edit the first post with the updated irc setup when irc.ambrosia.net is shutdown.

That's what I was going to do when I make a successful save against laziness.

I see three possibilities: either the verb tenses in that sentence are mixed up. I don't understand what you're saying, or both.

I believe Tyry was saying he probably wouldn't ever edit the pinned topic because he's too lazy, but now you've given him an excuse by offering to do it yourself.

Hmm, it appears the move hasn't occurred yet...so I guess I get to put off editing the post longer.

On the contrary, the move has already happened. If, for example, a newbie were to join the old #cythera, he/she would find only a robot, Fiery (idle) and Cham (whoever he even is, idle). Whereas if the newbie were to join the new #cythera, he/she would find a different robot, Fiery (idle), and Cham (idle).

...Well, I guess it doesn't really matter. But on the occasion that there is a bit of conversation, it's in the new channel. (My client auto-connects to both channels right now, so I'm an expert, you see.)

If they joined old-#cythera, they would see a topic pointing them to new-#cythera. If they joined new-#cythera, they would see a topic pointing them to a video of a shrieking sheep. Videos of shrieking sheep are the new-new-#cythera. QED.

I must say, after two months with the Ambrosia IRC still perfectly healthy, I was holding out hope that this was just a mean false rumor. Alas, old #cythera seems to be truly gone now. ;_; Farewell then, to the greatest chatroom ever to grace the internets...

I have edited the #cythera topic. It would be appreciated if someone more familiar with irc would look over the opening post and tell me if there are any mistakes to be corrected or any other alterations that might be helpful.

RIP, Ambrosia IRC :( .
