Recently I weighed some Crolna shards to answer a question for Fiery, and that set me off to decide to weigh every item in the game. With the exception of un-weighable items (such as a fishing net or a crate), I have now done this. I'm posting a topic about it because Cythera needs more topics.

Items in Cythera are weighed in "grains." As I understand it, grains were a unit of measurement a long time ago, equal to the approximate mass of one seed of barley or wheat. That would fit the time period that Cythera is set in, but otherwise I can't see a connection. One "grain" in Cythera seems to represent a lot more than a seed of barley. For example, a human corpse weighs 160 grains (perhaps a "grain" is similar to a pound?). Maybe somebody more knowledgeable in history/cultures can explain what exactly the "grains" of measurement used in Cythera are?

The weights of items seem to decide how much can fit in a container, which doesn't seem very realistic, but I'm not complaining.

I weighed most items with a scale, as that's the easiest way I know of. However, the scale did give me inconsistent results sometimes, so I don't completely trust it. Whenever a weight seemed "off" to me (for example, an axe weighing negative thirty-one thousand three hundred thirty-five grains), I'd weigh it again later. Sometimes however, the result that seemed weird persisted. For example, a single arrow (or sling stone) weighs 14 grains. But a stack of 2+ arrows weighs 1 grain per arrow. That doesn't make sense to me. Also, a sack weighs considerably more than a chest.

There are other weird things. A pitcher full of milk or water doesn't weigh any more than an empty one (although pails weigh more when full). A real strange device weighs 4 grains, whereas the edible one weighs only 1. Most books in the game weigh 10 grains, but the Timeflux book weighs 34. Maybe the Timeflux book was intended to be an insufferably long, boring book? A 2-grain spool of thread can produce a 4-grain piece of cloth. A child's corpse weighs the same amount as a grown-up's. A "light" shield is heavier than a full one, though a broken shield weighs almost nothing.

I used Ooshmaster/Wizzy's complete item list, though I did notice that the guard corpse is missing from the list. Hopefully that's the only missing item.

If anyone is curious, unicorn and titan corpses are the heaviest items in the game, weighing 255 grains each. I can post the whole item-weight list if anyone is interested, but I won't waste the space if not.
I'll become even more undignified than this

If you don't post it, this topic will die an even quicker death than it is already likely to.

I'll certainly be interested, when I get around to filling out item pages.

Well I guess I might as well post it. This list is a little messy because I just pasted it from Wizzy's website and then added in the weights when I got around to it. I think I've got it filled out. I kept the bizarre weighs for the axe & longsword because they cracked me up (& frustrated me because the scale kept giving them to me for a long time. I lost count of how many times I weighed those weapons and even tried different savefiles. I didn't bother checking the weights by any other method though, and when I weighed them on the scale the next day, I got more realistic results).

It must have been interesting getting the weight of "Bomb (Lit)".

It only takes one turn to weigh an item, and I'm pretty sure it takes several for a bomb to explode (maybe someday I'll count if I remember). I snuffed it out after I weighed it, because I'm boring like that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall the kesh bottle found in the ruffian encampment being much heavier than all the others in the game?

It acts like it's heavier (as in you can't fit it in most containers and it’s worth 25 inventory), but when you weigh it, the scale says it's 1 grain.

Interesting, that seems to suggest that--for some items anyway--weight is not related to an item's inventory size.

Nice work, BW! I need to add this information to the items page on the Reference Guide. I also need to add the information about hunger and sleeping/regenerating from a couple of other threads. I'll get around to that sometime...
