According to Timon, the gauntlets are magical.

Speaking of the strange device, I was wondering about the skeletons in the harpy cave. Sure they might have just been a group of ruffians gathering eggs, but I find it very suspicious that they were camped out right outside the mystic armour room. Could they have been seeking the armour, but didn't realize they needed the strange device to get it?
I'll become even more undignified than this

I'm inclined to suspect that it is mostly coincidence that they are camped outside the mystic armor room. The letter in the Ruffian Encampment indicates that the ruffians were actively harvesting kesh, and the group that camped there would almost certainly have had to have strange helmets to reach the cave and to camp there for a time. I suspect the firewood was kept because the area was used regularly and no one liked being in the dark with the harpies.
