I have never played a version lower than 1.0.4 except once to kill Alaric, but I got the mushroom steak in my first playthrough, and in any case the savefile that had it was from before I registered the game (I had the first and third crolna shards but not the second, I can’t believe how much time I must have spent fetching all those force walls in Maayti…). I just succeeded in getting it again using the I.M.Cheater file, by dividing food right after Aethon joined. Interestingly enough, I had no food at the time.

If you want, 453, PM me a copy of a savefile with the steak; although I doubt I'd be able to determine what causes it to spawn, I probably would be able to replicate it (i.e. give the character dozens of them).

I just got the steak again in a savefile I started last week. This is the third time (twice with I.M.Cheater, and prolly the first time as well, although I’m not certain) that I got it right after Aethon joined me. It seems to show up the first time you divide food after Aethon joins you, this would explain why I thought it was with him when he joined me. It also doesn’t seem to be related to the number of party members you have, since the last time I got it in my own savefile, I was unregistered (and thus didn’t have Timon in my group).
EDIT: I uploaded the savefile here if anyone (*coughselaxcough*) wants to mess around with it.

I've compared the to-do lists of my three mushroom games and Buzzy's latest mushroom game. Here's the constants:
-None accepted the wine contract gig
-None returned all the sapphire books
-All had learned magic
-All had cured plague
-None had talked to Jhiaxus
-All had asked Halos about Comana
-Murder had not happened in any
-None had taken the Timeflux book to Charax
-All had taken gator skin to Alastor
-None had told Anisa about Chrysothemis
I don't know if any of those are the answer /:

I was successfully able to identify the bytes for the steak and to duplicate 5 mushroom steaks.

What I really want is a STACK of 255 mushroom steaks. While you're at it, a stack of homemade flatbread might be nice...

Buzzzzy: I dumped the followers to make comparing savefiles easier. When they move around and such, it makes finding certain things a lot harder.
453: I'm not sure that stacking the steak is possible. In any case, my goal was not simply to replicate the steak but to be able to create it in a savefile rather than have to wait for it to spawn . I can try to find the item number for the homemade flatbread when I next have time.

Bryce had said he made a stack of 255 unguent, so I figured it was possible to hack-stack unstackable items. I'm sure I don't know how though!

Honestly, I haven't had any time to experiment lately, so I'm not sure about that ability. It might be possible. I did discover how to give them one-letter labels, so it might be possible to give them a number as a label. I doubt that this would cause them to stack though.

As far as I can tell, you need to know one of the Ratcatching Guild skills in order to get the mushroom steak. I do not know which one - or maybe it's more than one! All I can say is it's not Lockpicking - because the file Buzzy attached didn't have that one. Anyway I've now gotten the mushroom steak in a few of my own games (and one of them wasn't a rogue, it was a swordsman), and the Eteocles' skills seem to be the constant.

The file I attached was an Explorer who got it immediately after Aethon joined, so I had no Ratcatching skills whatsoever, unless those held by Aethon are what triggered it. Which would explain my previous perceived link to Aethon I suppose. That might mean that the steak is not, in fact, a bug, especially since making half-rotten foods does seem to be an appropriate ratcatcher skill.

It seems I did, which is weird because I thought I saved right after I got the steak. I tried to get the steak again in a new game, but Propontis won't give me the Ask Halos mission, he just gives me the generic Comana response.

Sorry Buzzy, I was way off! Turns out you need to have the rescue Ariadne mission (you do not need to have completed it) to get Propontis to send you to Halos.

I don't know what to think anymore. I've just gotten the mushroom steak on two more savefiles, each time right after I learned lockpicking. I divided food several times with no mushroom, learned lockpicking, then got the mushroom steak immediately on my next divide. The second file I reverted back, learned each of the other Guild skills one-by-one, but didn't get the mushroom steak until I learned Lockpicking.
& yet Buzzy definitely got it without learning Lockpicking. It doesn't make sense to me that it could be Aethon's skill, because I've divided food so many times after getting Aethon, without getting the mushroom...

I tried it a couple more times, once in the way I usually go about the game (Hector –> Meleager –> Timon –> Aethon) with all the missions in between, and once in a bizarre order (Aethon –> Timon –> Meleager –> Dryas –> Hector –> Ariadne), completing as few missions as possible. The first time I got it after Aethon joined as usual, and the second time I didn't get it until I learned lockpicking (after all the other aforementioned stuff). This probably has to do with causality again, for example Seldane's method of getting the edible strange device is one method that works, but it's not the only way (I've gotten it on non-rogue games without dividing food before). In the same way, lockpicking may very well be one way to produce the shroom steak, but it isn't the only way. The conclusion? It's a glitch.
