Hey, I was reading some old posts awhile back and remember someone bringing up the fact that they couldn't get Aethon to leave the party. I think it had something to do with learning the Missiles skill (something I never had a problem with), but I'm not sure. Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know that it IS possible to get Aethon to leave, but you must tell him to "wait" first. If you just tell him to leave, he says something like "Maybe it's time that I catch some rats of my own..." and nothing happens. If you say "wait", and then "leave", then he will say, "Fine, be that way." and he's gone!

If he won't join you, it means you haven't talked to Halos enough yet. Go to Catamarca, and talk to Proprontis' wife about Darius. She should say something about seeing him meeting with ruffians. Go back to Halos and ask about "kidnapping" and the result is he tells you to talk to Aethon. Aethon should now be able to join your party.
ooshmaster ground Alaric to dust, but to no effect.

Hmm, I never had any problem getting Aethon to leave my party (mostly because I've never tried ).
Alternatively, I think that you can ask Ake (in Odemia) about "kidnapping" or some such thing, and she'll point you to Halos. However, unless you have persuasion and haggling (maybe just persuasion?), she won't tell you anything unless you meet her at the garden at midnight. I believe that you need to have the door closed when you speak with her as well.
In addition, unless you have persuasion and haggling, you have to wait until late at night to speak to Halos.

I remember I got the beggar to teach it to me when I was away... I think you hear his story until you don't have an available option that works, then say belt again... I think it's on Slayer's site, too
I'm going back to the ones that know, with whom I can be what I want to be

Maybe the problem is I've never yet been able to learn persuasion or haggling?
1 You only need to know persuasion
2 In order to learn these skills you have to talk to the begger that says 'Get Off My Yard' tell him Neop and then Demon then go through a little puzzle. Answers on Slayers Guide to Cythera it's in the skills.
3 There is a time when you can talk to Holas without being shut out
