I quote both Desert Fox and Avatara as to the purpose of this kind of topic:

Desert Fox:

Quote

Since we havent had one of these before (at least in those stories I joined), I think this would be a perfect topic to have here. In this topic we will discuss what we are thinking/planning/trying to implement in the current TS.

Because this story is a joint effort, with each of us able to create another link in the chain, making the story a bit different than what you would do in a chronicle. The story has to be left open enough for the next person to pick up, either in battle or in idleness. What one can do is fill it with an activity (i.e. fishing, fighting, going to the fair) or put a small little continuation tale in there to mix it up a bit (sidequest). To mix it up, everyone should participate, with the story and the discussion on the story. What better to add to the story when everyone knows enough to be able to all add in a few steps here and there.

The single best way to get this dialogue going is IRC. Sorry, this webboard, no matter how great it can get, will never be as quick and easy as IRC is. If you can hop on IRC at any point, on our channel #cythera on the ASW servers, you will most likely find Tyrael, Selax, or even myself occupying the room, mostly wasting space. But if you start up a chat, you will get someone else talkin, which helps the ball get rolling.

Even though this board doesnt do as well as IRC does, it does have something to it that IRC can never achieve. Depth. I can explain things to others much more clearly than the quickness IRC can provide, but I wont be able to discuss how things are going to go as well, as ideas will be firing off so quick, the board mods here wouldnt appreciate our posts containing a sentence and then ending.

So, we can chat slowly here, and put our ideas forth for judging (another thing IRC cant do, seeing as the discussions go so quick - or nadia boots you for flooding ) as either realistic or far flung. A place to get organized before posting.

A place for ideas.

Welcome to OoC.

Avatara:

Quote

Like with last time, this is a place to post big Out of Character remarks, questions, story reviews, ideas, battle plans, suggestions, throw tomatoes, and other kinds of things for the new story.

As Desert Fox said, IRC is a very good place to discuss TSs. Sadly, it's basically dead these days. Still, it might be worth a try if people start using it again.

A brief description of Phaedrus can now be found in the Character Info thread, here.

This TS is shaping up to be a fun one :P.

Ok, I made a significant edit to my post. The way I had previously ended it had made it dependent on a post from Dark Jet, but since I don't know when he'll next be on, I went ahead and altered it.

Rather than just ending the battle, the post now includes a very brief "interrogation" (if it can be called that) scene and sets the group out on the continuation of their journey to the actual encampment. I also edited a few things here and there to make it more compliant with previous posts.
Oh and, DJ, I left what happens to Talryn completely up to you. You can still have him get rescued by whomever if you like, I just felt that the story needed to move on.

I would like to remind people that the TS is dependent on group participation, so if anyone has a post they would like to add, please do. :P

Hey, Selax got AIM?

and about the TS, is there a specific order to who posts or is it go for it after no less than 2 people?

Wizard, that works for me.

Anyways, my thoughts about Talryn's Curse is that:

When he was with the Death King and "merged" to get better at fighting, he retained a small bit of the DK's memory and the ability to "merge" with others when helping in casting a spell. While the effect is one way (to Talryn), im thinking that maybe after a certain amount of melds (probably 20+) Talryn will start to lose his identity and basically his memories become overridden... Basically after he melds too much, he would end up losing his identity.

No, I don't, and what I've heard about AOL makes me shudder at the thought of getting it.

Like all TSs, there is no particular order, except that double-posting is frowned upon (unless several days have passed).

Might I add a suggestion? I suggest that whenever Talryn uses this ability he is in someway more prone to darkness or to corruption. (Of course, this isn't a suggestion that you have to accept; it's only an idea.) The DK doesn't really "merge" with his servants (i.e. he doesn't become one with them), but he does put himself into their minds to influence and watch them, if that is what you mean. (Except in some cases he can take over the bodies of some of his servants, usually undead, and be literally present although not in his usual form.) He can gain power from them or empower them also.

Also, everyone, I second Wizard: group participation is essential. Don't be frightened of introducing your own plot twists or subplots.

I have iChat installed on this computer (minus the iSight), but it requires an AIM account or a .Mac account (which costs money) to use. Beyond that, the closest that I have is X-Chat (although ChanServ seems to have murdered the irc channel) or SEE (which requires a host).

Gah. . . I was hoping to post today, but I've been very busy and completely ran out of time!

But I do hope to put something up tomorrow.

And, Selax, in spite of the new trend you're trying to start, I have decided not to make this a triple post. Avatara might not be thrilled if I did.

I don't understand your request, are you asking me to sticky your triple post and send out links to everyone on my contact list? :P

I apologize for turning this into a promotional gig for AOL, I don't do that very often.

After doing a little research, I think the safest most popular way to get an AIM account (if you so choose) is to register from www.aim.com - sign up for the free email, and you get an AIM account. Looking at the form, it only seems to require your birthdate*, gender, country, and zip code in terms of personal information.

*Then again, most sites require this by law now, since you have to be 13 to access many sites. Using your real zip code is up to you, I doubt they'll ever actually verify it.

** I got my account when Netscape had a promotion where you sign up for an email account with them, you'd get a free AIM screen-name that matched. After signing up, I've never logged into my email (not sure I even remember the password), so only using the AIM portion is possible.

I was going to use this ending space to post a screenshot of my "Cythera buddy" list, but realized some people might not take too kindly to having their real names published. Needless to say, if you've ever wondered how to contact theKestrel, iKaterei, Desert Fox, Moonshadow, Pallas Athene, Theo Nean Donly, Talos, ferazel_09, Bryce, or cache22, they all use AIM. (and probably more I either misfiled or never remembered their account names) (I also make no guarantees as to how often these individuals are online, though I've tried to create some order with most frequent -> less frequent)

Actually, I suppose it's okay if you leave it...two extra posts for the price of one. :P

In answer to your question, Dark Jet, I have been very busy this week (and may be next week as well).

Concerning AIM, it'd be really nice to be able to have it as a TS coordination tool or way to talk to other members like IRC used to be, but I don't think that I'm willing to get an account on it after some of what I've heard about it.

I noticed a while ago—I forget when—that there is a Cythera group on Yahoo. Does anyone still frequent it?

By the way, although I could get a post up on the TS today, I thinking that I will probably wait until tomorrow.

OKay the resaon my posts havent gone into too much detail about the mage leader so far, is so that someone who has a better idea of what that 'character' is like can say something. And i don't think killing off the leader right then would've helped..

Well, studying for tomorrow's midterm took a great deal less time than I expected (although I'm going to guess that I'd still be studying for it if it weren't open-note, open-book, etc.) and I even had time to gather some links for the report that I need to write, so I will have time to post today. However, considering that I'll be writing this report and another on Wednesday and who knows for how many days afterward, I don't know if I'll be able to post again before next Friday.

First, I shall attempt to address your concerns concerning the mage leader in my post, Dark Jet. This post may be edited later, by the way. After some consideration, Wizard and I agreed to leave what happens with Talryn and the mage leader to you. The only thing is that the mage leader can't be beaten or fought to a draw yet. We judged that this would be damaging to the stories purpose—if the bad guy were so easily and so quickly defeated. If you wish me to edit this post or have any questions, please let me know.

Second, Rapierian will attempt to rescue one of the others from the ruffians in this post. I'm going to leave the identity of this person ambiguous, so that any member with a captured character may fill the role. (This way the TS won't stall waiting for one person.) Somebody could even use this opportunity to introduce another character if they wish.

Third...

Where is everybody?

eh, woops.

Selax, I did my post before reading that bit about the mage leader. I hope that the post works, if not I'll change it. And about the skeleton, (if Talryn still makes it outside) I can have either Talryn kill it or your char can regain control, its up to you.

My post is now up.

Dark Jet, instead of making you edit your post, Selax and I decided to make the man that you put to sleep sort of a second in command. The real mage leader is the man who was eavesdropping from the next room. That works well anyways, because we thought it would add more interest to the story if the entire group believes that the cloaked man, the second, is the actual leader. There is also a possibility that the mage leader will survive this TS, so your post may help to do that.

Here's a brief description of the two:
  • Master Altérius - The cloaked figure and second in command. He is middle-aged man who was once a mage studying at Pynx, but he hungered after power more than was healthy for him. In an attempt to turn himself into a fire golem, he horribly scarred his entire body, which is why he hides under a cloak and hood. After that, he was thrown out of the monasterium. He spent a considerable amount of years living off the land in various locations on the island of Cythera. Eventually, though, he turned to drink to try to drown his sorrows. Some way or other he made connections with ruffians and became addicted to kesh. With the recent resurfacing of the intoxicant, he has joined the ruffians, and being familiar with magic, was promoted to second rank. For a little bit, the group is going to think that this man is the ruffian leader.

  • The leader is largely at this point unknown. We think that he'll be a reasonably young man, mid-30's, with a hard face and a look that seems to see straight through a person. It is also unknown when he will be unveiled to the group.

I don't much about it other than that it is in the Cythera weblinks.

Was it fairly busy at some point or has it always been somewhat inactive?

EDIT:
I will probably post on the TS either today or tomorrow, by the way.
