9x/ME was a home os. It only crashed every ten minutes. ME even bluescreened while Bill Gates was demonstrating it. "And... uh oh."
They weren't meant to conflict, because they were meant for two different markets.
Win2k = NT 5. XP = NT 5.1. XP Home = pathetic, and missing everything that made NT worth running (NTFS, multiprocessor support...).
Its like what happens when you cross a phoenix with a super black hole; it's powerful enough to destroy itself, only to be reborn in a vicious cycle of torment and pain. Or in this case, nonsense.

Win2000 = Win98 1.1
Win98 = Win95 1.0
Win95 = Win3.1
Win3.1 = Win3.0
Win3.0 = Win2.1
Win2.1 = Win2.0
Win2.0 = Win1.0
Win1.0 = MSDOS
MSDOS = DOS
DOS = might as well be Xenix.
Oops, forgot the NT's.

DOS was awesome... But Microsoft didn't make it. They owned the rights to it. DOS was the fruit of someone else's labor. Of course, they modified it into MSDOS.
There were some kickass DOS games in 1994, too. Look at Star Control 2. There's even a MacOSX/Linux/Windows port up somewhere called The Ur-Quan Masters.
