iPod mini

Because of some of my recent accomplishments, my parents felt it appropriate to purchase me and iPod mini. I am very excited. However! It came to my attention that the iPod mini does not indeed hold 1500 songs. It says right now that I have 181 songs at 4.65 GB. I have a 6 GB mini, so I wonder...is it a scam? Even if all my songs were eight minutes long, I would still be able to fit 750 songs onto it. Does this mean I have to compress all of my songs or something. I'm hoping there's a solution I'm just not seeing.
Whatever happens..happens.

The number of songs it holds is an irrelevant number. If you have like, 1 opera it could take up half your iPod. The number of songs is based on 4-minute, 3 MB tracks or something close to that.
368 songs, 1.94 GB

949 songs here, 4.72GB. And my collection's mainly 192kps AAC. I think you've compressed your songs wrong, µ. "Get Info" on a bunch of them to see whether they are indeed 128kps. It might be that a bunch of lossless songs are clogging up your system - or perhaps you imported a bunch of .wav files?

Or even .aiff? Those are just as large. Also check for 320kps song files, those are often twice as large as most people want for an (arguably) miniscule quality improvement.
I'm not sure its solely song length. I have 915 songs for 78 hours worth of music, and they take up around 5.2 GB.
My largest songs, cds I joined all into one track, run at about 70MB for 75 minutes. If you have a bunch of CDs/long tracks (Beethoven's symphonies for example, average around 20 minutes per part) then you aren't going to be able to fit 1500 songs on your pod.
The average mainstream song is about 3-4 minutes, which is why [as someone else mentioned] that number was used to come up with the 1500 song estimate.

Better quality, and ability to use AAC instead of WMA when buying from online stores does it for me. Oh, and I can use Firewire since I don't have USB 2.0 on my machine makes moving all the songs much much faster.

iPod does it right. Apple has it figured. Course, if you're hard over on the mone, feel free not to buy one.
I have 648 songs taking up 2.7 gigs.

1411 kps? The data rate on a CD is only 512 kps! That's comparable the data rate used in sound studios - how did you ever end up with a file like that?

Are you sure? Back when I was importing CDs as aiffs, they read something like 1411 kps. At any rate, it was over 1100.
