I would guess, though, that Apple may now be using hardware in their newer machines which 9 would not have the drivers to support...

I did a search on "Changeling Software" at google and the very first search result were the Ambrosia boards
Interesting because I remember my father telling me he was in the beta for a game, but I never believed him. It looks like that had to be true otherwise I don't know how he would have gotten a copy of Changeling's version of ares. If I remember, when you died the screen would splatter blood and then slowly fill red
(P.S. I remember playing PegLeg too)

It should run ares fine in anything pre OS X. So I'd keep a bootable installation of OS 9 on your B&W if you want to play it.

Is doing that hard, and if no, 1) how do I do it, or 2) did you do it and, if so, can you send whatever you did my way?

Actually, I find that when Classic boots up as soon as you log in, the frame-rate becomes more acceptable, even playable if you have all your other apps closed.

Combined with my method, we probably wouldn't need an Ares X.

I ran it on my Centris 650 with System 7.5.3. It wasn't the fastest thing out there, but it still ran pretty well.

Ok - cool, then it looks like it goes a ways back into 7 - looks like Ambrosia didn't stick the minimum software requirements on the page for it either - too bad. Anyone else run it on something less than 7.5?

My mother had an abominally old Performa that ran 7.2.x or 7.4.x. It broke down about a year ago- it got infected by the INIT 29A virus, along with ppat, and Sevendust, and the infection had been hiding on the HD for about three years.
I remember running Ares on it... It was totally slowed down to turtle-speed and below.

I have Ares on my eMac now, but it does not run very well as most of you said. There better be an update for it to work.
Can you say "Ares X"? I'm hopin'.
I talked to Nathan about the possibility of Ares X
hey Kirk,
I'm afraid it would be difficult for me to justify the amount of time
it would take to make a Mac OS X native version of Ares, either
financially or artistically. If it was trivial to update the code, I
would certainly do so -- but it isn't. If I thought it would be
financially or artistically rewarding to update the code, I would do it
-- but I don't think it would be. I'd much rather spend my time
creating something new than getting a seven-plus year-old game to work,
which was originally written to run on the 68020 processor.
That said, Ares is my "baby," my favorite creation, and so I have a lot
of affection for it. There are many boring, involved, technical hurdles
which would be need to be cleared to get it to be a Carbon application.
If I find an easy way to do it -- apart from surrendering Ares to
someone else -- I will.
