It depends on the distance from the tree to the window, but a good rule of thumb is the zoomier the bettier.

I prefer the hidden camera in the wall method. You can't beat a good pinhole camera.

What about when it can't get through the roof, or it spys through the window only to see the floor? Furthermore you'd get a lovely shot of your neighbor doing his thing in the backyard.
