A number of precincts in Alaska close early by benefit of everyone in said precinct (Alaska's population is roughly only the size of greater Albuquerque and Rio Rancho put toghether, some precincts are very small in terms of numbers up there) having voted and those statistics being up prior to the polls officially closing. Alaska generally closes with 60% of the precincts having already reported so a projection is usually possible immediately.

Oh well, didn't get my presidential candidate, but at least my state's ballot issues went in a very favorable direction.

What Pufer would prefer: Howard Dean/Zell Miller vs Bob Dole/Jeb Bush. A win/win situation all around, but, unfortunately, involving two individuals solidly retired from politics.

You're lucky. Not a single of the issues went the way I wanted in my state, even the ones that I really thought would pass...

<Pikeman> Just Chat is like Bacardi 151... it can be really stimulating, but only in very small doses, because overall it just tastes like s### and can get you in a lot of trouble.

It could, of course, just mean that most of the people in the country are vastly more wealthy than you, don't want higher income taxes, but do want tax breaks for their large corporations (you damn peasant ). Hey, it's every bit as likely as Bush gaining all of his votes from folks who are exceptionally unintelligent, as you'd lead us to believe.

This is true. However, a case can certainly be made that Kerry supporters aren't as exceptionally uninformed as Bush supporters. [Check out the "Separate Realities of Bush and Kerry Supporters" Report]

I could make a similar case showing how a majority of self-declared supporters of the 1994 Clinton Gun Ban don't have a clue as to what the Assault Weapons Ban actually does (hint: it has nothing to do with banning assault weapons as a genre, and certainly nothing to do with banning automatic weapons as a majority of the group in question thought) yet still support it blindly. Likewise, there is a similar survey of volunteers at environmental organizations floating around which shows that a large percentage of them believe that Bush's Clean Air Act was actually a step forward for their cause and beneficial to the environment, which it certainly is not.
This, unfortunately, is the nature of politics in this country. A vast majority of the nation, on both sides, is being misled by all the crap rhetoric floating around and few people have enough time to study up on all aspects of their particular candidate's platforms. I'm sure that if you were to ask the same folks who participated in that poll about, say, abortion policies of the two candidates, a number, if not a majority, of Kerry supporters would be willing to state that Kerry is pro-abortion, which he states that he is not. Likewise, I'm sure that they'd state that Bush is against renewing the Assault Weapons Ban even though he has stated that he supports it (although this would probably be seen on Bush's side also due, yes, I'm willing to admit it, to NRA propoganda). People agree with their candidate on a few issues then project all their other beliefs on that person just because it's easier than actually becoming informed. It's not right, but it is what is happening and will continue on into the future.
