Review Of New Webboards Banter back and forth on what you think

Sooo - what do you think? I've been here about 5 minutes. Very different...

In some ways this seems slightly stereotypical - I'm not sure I see the karma system anymore and so rank is based on number of posts.

I'm glad user info has been retained, but somehow I feel like ASW's boards have lost the individuality and hominess that they had prior to the change. The navagation of this new system may be improved, but it seems that it will take a little while to figure out.

First impressions, 1/5 - but then again, who likes change anyway?

That seems a bit different too...

Well, at least my user name is here, but it seems that they lost 700 of my posts :-P[/edit]

I lost 700 too. One theory is that the Nova board had problems with the transfer, and when they put it back the posts didn't count.

They aren't completely finished yet, it'll have its old ambrosia look soon (hopefully).

I'm still trying to disprove your theory because there's no way in hell I posted on Nova 600 times. Nor uplink. And it doesn't make sense to have someone gain 2400 posts because the boards exploded, though the latter bit is easily explained. :P

As for the rest, you are right, karma is definitely being worked on - right now it just sucks. (and is so totally different it makes the mind bleed) If you've been around for a few days you'll notice the color scheme has changed, though only slightly (uglier actually), as Tom plays around with skin options so they can make a more asw-like color scheme successfully. Lots of icons that go along with that, since there are so many buttons now.

You definitely posted to several of Cythera's archived threads, though.

There's definitely a problem with the Nova boards, though - see Frandall. 1918 posts, 3438 of which are in the Nova forum.

Hm. I don't like the look at all. As Shrout said (Why is he always right about everything?) the boards have definatly lost some individuality. The cartoon-y style was something that I was gearful about ever since I saw the "majir" boards back in the day (ASW test boards that a bunch of members got access to).

I hope Karma gets back up soon, too, as that was always fun to keep track of. I, however, dislike the member number thing. It seems like it will raise prejudice against those who registered later.

Oh well.

Only in the same way that post counts did.

Did on the B&B.

Then, in the same way, if post count didn't modify respect, why should member number?

It's weird - somehow I feel like I'm talking to different people :-P

I sure wish I was right about everything LOBF. I'd probably be immortal then...

I am going to start praising Shrout as a deity, and tattoo his face onto my forehead, and send him money, and sleep in his front yard in a tent, and do acid and make bonfires which I will dance around every night, praising his righeousness

So, you're going to become his secret stalker? His neighbors won't like that.

(and you must have one heck of a forehead)

FYI, LOBF, I think you kindof messed up what you had meant to do with the mail link in your signature, it says your address twice followed by an </a> tag.

Actually, I think all links are messed up right now.

Yeah, the switch added an extra "http://" in most cases. Be wary, fixing your sig will result in it being under the new 500 char sig limit, 500 chars counting UBB code. So if you have a lot of links (like EVula and mrxak do), then you're out of luck.

If length is your only concern, then it's easy enough to fix - just take a line from Slug and use an image for your sig instead of excessively long text.

Tattoo, bad. Money, good. Front yard, bad. Acid, bad. Bonfires, bad. Dancing, bad.

Money, good.

Hey, no real complaints here. Fake ones, maybe - a few. But those are, of course, unsubstantiated fake complaints. I've been using the new boards a bit and a lot of the features really are cool. I back you 100% on the skins though :P

Double post but hey, sue me.

Some uber cool things I'v noticed:

Ability to sort users by a bunch of different things (photos, etc.)
Ability to look through all topics you created
Ability to look at list of posts made by you/other users and auto-links to them
Cool profiles.

All right, I'm slowly becoming a beleiver. Get the skins!

Unfortunately, it looks like the only way mods can use the karma/warning system is if andrew lets us ban people and strip moderator rights...so... :P

(well, only in extreme cases)

I have no idea how this board is driven or what kind of code it uses, but could they custom code in the karma feature again using the old UBB methods?

Reminder: I have no idea what I'm talking about. :P
