I've been around for a while, and I've seen moderators be made and unmade. Here's how I think it happens:
1. If you bombard Andrew with emails, you won't become a mod. That's the kind of person who definately
should not be a mod.
2. Posting well thought out, helpful, and intelligent posts will help you a lot. Helping newbies or directing them to FAQs without swearing can get you a long way.
3. Don't spam too much. To become a mod, you really can't spam at all, although it seems that you can spam quite a lot before being un-moded. (Octoberfost)
4. There has to be an opening. Either the board is expanding, and another moderator is needed, (Cythera board) or an old moderator is been dethroned (or two, in the case of the EV:B+

.
5. A good deal of luck. If you're kind too people on the boards, you can get Andrew's favor, though it seems being noticed helps just as much.
