What is this remote control for??

I found this remote control in Alaric's desk where the Sapphire book is. WHat is it used for? It says it is a strange rod but its clearly like a tv remote. What is it??

It is to play audio CDs. I got it to work on my friends computer. But I have the same problem with my comp.
can't get the audio CDs to play. The CD player says play but i can't here anything. I think my CD-ROMs a
MAT****A CD-ROM CR-8008? I've tried the Apple Driver and all the other drivers that i could find but it
doesn't work!!!!!!!
