What is your opinion on dress codes / uniforms in school or at work?

At my workplace we have a uniform thing going on -- we have to wear a store t-shirt and tan pants/shorts/whatnot. I support this, and think it's quite a good idea. First of all, it seperates the employee from the customer. Second of all, you don't have to think about what you're going to wear to work every morning. And third of all, 'inappropriate' dress doesn't become a problem.

At my school we have a bit of a lax, loosely enforced dress-code. The whole idea is pretty stupid, and no one follows it anyway. There's no point to a school dress-code, and school uniforms are just plain stupid. Yes, school is a place to learn, but it's a social environment as well, and I fail to see how having all kids look the same improves upon that. I don't know about you, but I don't recall clothes interrupting any of my classes. As for 'distractions' with scantly-clad females, having them wear uniforms isn't going to stop any guys from thinking about their female classmate's butt. Especially since most girl's uniforms contain a skirt (!?).

Your thoughts?

I don't like school uniforms. I'll leav it at that and spare my post from being redundant.

The workplace is a little different. I don't mind my company dress code; it gives me an excuse to wear a nifty suite, and they don't mind my hair.

Whatever women are wearing, men will always be distracted by them. Witness the Taliban's ban on women wearing white socks under their stifling, black, head-to-toe coverings - supposedly the flash of a white sock might attract male attention.

Seeing as I actually went to a school with a uniform, I can second that. Sure, the girls might complain that their uniform is more of a sack than a dress, but that doesn't stop the boys from trying to get a glimpse of their underwear when they sit down. And while it might tone down other areas, some things just can't be hidden under cotton.

dude3 and µ can back me upon this: Our dress code is basically never enforced, and in fact occasionally broken by some of the younger teachers. THe rules are there, but nobody cares. I think this is partially because certain teachers kind of like some of the "inappropritae" dress. I've never worn a uniform.

Same thing at my school.

We have the occational (1 or 2 a year, max) 'dress days', where we have to wear suit and ties and the like. I actually like those: one or two days a year, you get to dress up for school.

In general, I have no real problems with my school and it's dress codes.

The Journalist is right; in fact, I often go pantless at school.

With all the running around and the like we do, we're usually on the hot side. And it doesn't get cold in there... Although I have seen one person in a sweatshirt and it wasn't really a problem.

Some kind of name tag worn on a lanyard around the neck should be the only requirement for work dress codes. Everything should be left up to the individual, obviously an attorney would be wearing a suit (common courtesy) and you wouldn't want a funeral director wearing a pink hawaian shirt and swim trunks so he wouldn't wear it for business purposes. If you work in a cubicle all day with little human contact, there is no need to wear a suit.

On the other hand, in retail and customer service, a uniform can be a good thing. Being able to pick out staff from their clothing is quite helpful, and so long as the uniform isn't anything crazy (a pair of pants and the company shirt seems to be the norm for guys), it's not a huge hassle to wear either.

Our school has a dress code wherein you have to buy a shirt from the school with the school logo stamped on it. It sucks. And its enforced like hell.

Don't you even bitch about the dress code, first of all the shirts are damn cheap, second of all its better then what we use to wear, third of all you have one more year of it so what do you care, and fourth of all its only a shirt.

Bah. I bitch about our dresscode frequently. What do you mean its better than what we used to wear? The last dress code we had was basically "anything aside from nudity goes!"

While uniforms would prevent people from making fun of others' clothing (happens in my school all the time, sadly), I think it wouldn't be a very nice thing (I sound like a little kid...Wait...I'm only twelve...bah) to surpress one's self-expression.

At my school, girls have to wear shorts below their fingertips, shirts that reach the top of their pants, and three-inch straps. I don't mind really. I'm a girl, but I wear t-shirts and jeans all the time anyway. Guys really don't have any restrictions, as long as they wear clothes that aren't pajamas (girls can't wear pajamas either).

But eh. Whatever. :P

I think dress codes at work make sense usually, since a lot of jobs you have to work among customers and want to be distinguished as someone who works there. As school dress codes go, though, I really don't care what the code is and will wear whatever I please. I don't worry about the dress code, and I shouldn't have to worry about it. I dress in what I consider casual and comfortable, whether anyone thinks it's innapropriate or not.

I have attended uniform schools before, and disliked it greatly. Everythings the same, there's no color to my day... kind of depressing at times. Then they complained about how little things were not to code. My pants had a different tag, and the buttons on my shirt were not a solid color...!! BULL****!! I know not all uniform school are like that, but that was enough to make me want to dress whatever way I damn well please.

dude3, if I had to see you pantless at school, or anywhere for that matter, I'd scream bloody murder and run like hell home and cry to my mom. Maybe that's stretching it a bit. But, I would scream.

The Journalist is correct though, at our school people are very easy about what we wear. But ya know, I tried wearing a spaghetti strap shirt and Mickey Mouse pj bottoms to school for PJ day, (my b/f likes spaghetti straps with pj's) So, I wore it to school, and the teachers made me change! OMG! And then! They let other girls wear their pj's that were practically identical, only with a bit more cleavage. So, Don't ask me what anyone's thinking.

Also, I've been to private schools, the whole nine yards, they would..
A Make you wear Dennis khaki pants
B Make you wear Dennis white polo shirt (tucked)
C Make you wear Dennis brown or black belt
D Make you wear Dennis white socks
E Make you wear not Dennis!, shoes that tie
F Allow you to only wear ONE piece of jewelry, one ring, one necklace, one bracelet, or one set of earings.
