Here is an interesting website. An apparent armageddon-scenario archive.

Quote

Isn't life a bitch? The world is going to end. You don't even have to be a religious fundamentalist to see that's true.

Some people collect postal stamps; Exit Mundi collects scenarios of what could go wrong with the world. Sure, our planet could get hit by an asteroid. But hey, that's nothing. Did you know we could all be munched away by hungry molecules? Or that our physicists could unintentionally wipe us all out while tinkering with particles? `Oops, sorry...'

Exit Mundi isn't in it for doom preaching, but strictly for fun. It's a fascinating thought: if that &*%#-comet didn't wipe out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, we wouldn't be here pondering about apocalypses and armageddons in the first place. The dinosaurs roamed our planet millions of years longer than we did. If it wasn't for the comet, they still would.

That's why this site is a tribute to floods, quantum explosions and awfully big chunks of space rock falling out of the sky. If there's a lesson to be learnt, it should be that within every end looms the dawn of a new beginning. Sounds good, doesn't it?

If you know of any other cool apocalyptic scenarios, please let us know!.

So here's a fun topic for discussion: How do you think the world is going to end?

Sounds cool, but he forgot the one where the colliders formed a black hole!

The world itself will only end when our sun goes nova a few billion years. Life will end before that, but the Earth itself is really, really hard to destroy. Humans could not do it.

No, our sun will not go nova. Stars only go nova if they are class giant or supergiant, and the sun is a medium class star. It instead will expand during the red giant phase, engulfing planets up to Venus, then deep-frying all life on earth (if there still is any) and then shrink to a white dwarf and earth will basically freeze. So, unless something unexpected happens, the earth will remain as a frozen hulk of rock and will not actually be destroyed.

No, nova is when the star explodes, as a result of the core becoming iron.

Human life will end with a supervirus (Captain Trips to the superlative) sweeping through the population of the solar system. A few will survive momentarally (perhaps a couple of generations) but all will eventually succumb. The world will cease to be within a universal event beyond our current limited comprehension, quite a while after the demise of all humans.

Well, if the universe begins collapsing upon itself, the Earth will be crushed. If not, and the universe continues to expand, then eventually the super-blackhole in the center of the Milky Way will suck up the galaxy, and the Earth will cease to exist. Either event will take billions of years to occur though.

Of course, some kind of death star, or maybe a *really* big asteroid could crush Earth.

Actually, if all time/space is relative we wouldn't really notice the crunch. A new dynamic theory which I highly entertain is that the "speed" of time is dependant upon the expansion of the universe. Unfortunately, we cannot observe relative to time. We are totally enslaved to it, no way around it, along with everything else. Assuming that the universe does end up halting expansion, time would simply stop, and the big crunch would happen awfully quick. From our viewpoint, things would be going smoothly and suddenly everything would simply crunch out of existance before we even had time to register what happened. *POOF!* Gone.

But as far as something apocalyptic, I say a little researched side-effect of global warming. Just think for a moment-where does all that melted water go? Around the coasts of course, but which coasts? The equatorial ones. Now, there are also a few thin spots in the Earth's crust around the equator. I say the end of the world (well, as we know it) comes from too much water built up on a weak spot on the equatorial crust. The weak spot buckles a continental plate, resulting in a massive tectonic convulsion around the globe that lasts for decades until all the plates settle back into place.
