Because all the topics were locked, and when I first made the descion to start posting here I promised to raise the intelligence level, I present this question:
In the following sentence, what parts of speach are the words: both, hockey, and soccer:
Julie Plays both field hockey and soccer.
Thanks for any help. My English teacher and I are having a debate about the answer.

Err...I think it's pretty obvious that hockey and soccer are nouns. Please tell me what the controversy is about. If memory serves, both is a correlative conjunction.

I think the hockey and soccer are direct objects, but my English teacher thinks that both is the direct object and hockey and soccer are objective complements.

I had almost this exact discussion with a classmate a month or two ago. We came to an undramatic conclusion: it can be either, but my teacher thought I was right (soccer and hockey are direct objects).

Do you have any qualifications that would make my insane English teacher accept that post as fact?
