Alright, new topic of conversation: who's everyone's favorite 16th century Ottoman Sultan?
I'm personally rather fond of Selim I ("the Grim") over the rather more obvious choice of Sulayman ("the Magnificent"). I mean, reforming the devshirmeh institutions to gain greater control over religious practice and the bureacracy in the empire through establishing the offices of Shaykh al-Islam and Grand Wizir, marrying a "cheerful" and lovely young Polish gal, and leading the efforts to screw with the Hapsbergs whenever he could is all great, but, without his dear old dad gaining religious legitimacy with the conquering of Mamluk north Africa and the subsequent attainment of the title of Caliph with the surrender of Mecca and Medina, Sulayman couldn't have established his dominance over the leadership of the various religious and social bodies within the empire and likely would have had to work at fighting off rogue leaders of Sufi orders (heaven forbid the Bektashiyye order turn on him carrying the entire Yeni Ceri force with it) and the ever present threat of the 'ulama' turning public opinion against him. Furthermore, had Selim not killed off all of his sons except for Sulayman so that Sulayman wouldn't have to fight a succession battle and risk screwing up imperial stability, Sulayman almost certainly couldn't have spent his time sending Barbarossa off to terrorize the Mediterranean and send his main forces to invade Hungary. Thus, I find that Selim I was certainly the greatest Ottoman Sultan of the 16th century and easily my favorite.

I think we should ban Boris from saying the phrase "nuclear lock of doom" for a while... 'cause we got one.
Or maybe Sarg got jealous of SA.
You put what in my Power Mac?

Well kind of... I rarely get the chance to nuke a topic... or a board...
Oh well. I preffer to oppress with finess as opposed to brute force and terror (granted, brute force and terror are rather fun so long as you aren't on the business end of them).

You think you have it bad? Nobody breaks rules on the Cythera board. I don't think I've gotten to warn a user in over four years now.
