iTunes Top 5

My top 5 is dominated by songs I consider beautiful, even if most of them are sad.
#1: A Perfect Circle - The Noose (played 318 times)
Understatedly chilling, but utterly gorgeous.
#2: VAST - Touched (played 271 times)
All song about a loss so deep's it's spiritual.
#3: Shihad - Spacing (played 199 times)
Sad, but optimistic. Not all partings are forever.
#4: Seal - Kiss from a Rose (played 187 times)
I'm not entirely sure what he's singing about, but damn can Seal sing.
#5: A Perfect Circle - Pet (played 179 times)
Angry, possessive, and covertly political. Pretty much the opposite of the way I live.

Dragostea Din Tei-O-Zone (54 plays)
The Numa Numa song. Was an obsession for a while.
Haben Sie Gahort Das Deutche Band?-The Producers (41 plays)
LipSync. Enough said.
Whip It-Devo (27 plays)
I'm kinda surpried at this one.
I Bet You They Won't Play this Song on the Radio-Monty Python (27 plays)
Dr Mario-Super Smash Bros. Melee (24 plays)
Er, yeah. Just, yeah.
Nothing particularly profound here; most of the time if I'm listening to iTunes I'm mostly looking for background noise.

Alison Krauss - The Lucky One (43 plays)
Been a while since I've really been into Alison Krauss's stuff, still great vocal stuff though.
Iron & Wine and Calexico - Dead Man's Will (38 plays)
Unbelievable song. Sam Beam is the friggen' king of slow, minimalist, vocal work.
Indigo Girls - Love Will Come To You (36 plays)
I need to find more lesbian harmonizing duos. Two of my favorite groups are the Indigo Girls and The Ditty Bops, some of the best stuff out there.
Iron & Wine - Sodom, South Georgia (34 plays)
Sam Beam again, can't be beat.
Tom Waits - Telephone Call from Istanbul (32 plays)
How can you not like a song whose chorus includes the lyrics, "Will you sell me one of those if I shave my head/Get me out of town is what Fireball said/Never trust a man in blue trench coat/Never drive a car when you're dead." Classic mad Tom Waits.

It's just a kind of sad piece, but I like it.
2. And I love Her – The Beatles played 286 times
I listen to the Beatles a lot while I read, and this song reminds me of one of my books, oddly enough.
3. Gregorian Chant, Dies irae – Charles Hoffer played 120 times
This piece is kind of haunting.
4. Theme of Schindler's List - Izthak Perlman played 109 times
Another haunting piece.
5. Siege of Madrigal – Martin O'Donnell – played 109 times
A cool piece from the guy who wrote Halo's music.

Not much to say besides that this is a great song. Somewhat political, although that's buried under the obtuse lyrics.
The Mars Volta - Intertiatic E.S.P. (164 Plays)
One of those songs, that probably only makes sense if you use some scheduled substance (I believe it's about a Heroin overdose), but the energy and the interplay of guitar and keyboard make it good.
Tool - Lateralus (151 Plays)
A piece that builds up slowly of over it's nine minute length. What's most interesting about it is rhythm in the vocals in the first three or four minutes in this song.
At the Drive-In - One Armed Scissor (130 Plays)
Comments about the same as for Intertiatic E.S.P.
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Sunshine the Werewolf (125 Plays)
Sometimes it's fun to listen to hyper-aggressive vocals (a.k.a. screaming). This just happens to have excellent music to accompany it as well.

Live album from 1978
David Bowie - Diamond Dogs (~10 plays)
The start of Bowie's soul phase

Its like what happens when you cross a phoenix with a super black hole; it's powerful enough to destroy itself, only to be reborn in a vicious cycle of torment and pain. Or in this case, nonsense.

And I think I win handily for 'most played' music. Though technically I should have songs with even greater counts, but for some reason they got reset when I switched computers… *shrug*

Dave Seaman - Renaissance: Awakening (Disc 1) - ~176 plays
Sasha & John Digweed - Northern Exposure II: West Coast - ~174 plays
Sasha & John Digweed - Northern Exposure II: East Coast - ~161 plays
Dave Seaman - Renaissance: Awakening (Disc 2) - ~147 plays
Sasha & John Digweed - Northern Exposure III: Expeditions ~145 plays
You can't tell from the list (actually, I don't know if you can tell much from the list), but I do have sets from other artists. The two groups above just happen to be my favorite mixers, so it takes longer to get tired of their albums.

The Offspring - Hit That (89)
Foo Fighters - Everlong (86)
Marcy Playground - Sex and Candy (77)
Eagle-Eye Cherry - Save Tonight (76)
Yeah, I'm into that late 90's/early 00's pop rock. 1996 was a good year.

So, what you see here are the songs that pop up most often in my current, often played playlists, not any other ones, or ones that used to exist but don't.
Lips of Deciet/Avenged Sevenfold/Sounding the Seventh Trumpet/127
Sick song. Really.
Mistress/Disturbed/Believe/109
Also insanely good. In fact, I don't know how this got passed. Oh well.
Unholy Confessions/Avenged Sevenfold/87
The video
Intoxication/Disturbed/Believe/85
This doesn't stand out to me as a song that I actually play a lot. Not at all bad, but... the reset must have been really recent.
Prayer/Disturbed/Believe/84
Really a good song here, but still, I don't know how it got in my top five. Oh well.
To change myself, I'd rather die
Though they will not understand
I won't make the greatest sacrifice
You can't predict where the outcome lies
You'll never take me alive
I'm alive

If you still have "Dammerung" buried in your library (from a year ago), you'll notice it abruptly starts and stops - though admittedly, it works as a stand-alone better than most of the other tracks I have, one of the reasons I picked it. So in my case, it doesn't really make sense to not shuffle by album, because then I'd get a bunch of abrupt starts and transitions into nothing.
I used to rate my collection with a star system, until my hard drive got wiped a year ago and I had to start all over. Now I just flag songs with 4 stars if I liked them enough to return to them later, or 5 stars if its something I can play over and over and never get tired of. Somehow, I ended up with a similar "striation" situation, except its more on the album level than the song level (and obviously with different numbers).

I rarely listen to stuff by album, unless it's an album that happens to have a group of songs that flow well that I really like (Iron & Wine and Calexico - In the Reins, for example), but I do listen to songs by artist frequently. For example, today while studying I decided that I felt like listening to some Cake, so I started some up. I have five partial Cake albums on this machine, but that is irrelevant as I listened to the songs from those albums in alphabetical order of title rather than by album. It was, however, all Cake with nothing else. If there's any striation on my machine, it is by artist rather than by album/rating.

Yeahhh... far from my favorite song but I'm using it for this little media project I'm doing in my spare time so I've really gotten to know it.
#2: Actionslacks - Sporting Life - 175 plays
Ah, I just like this song, it's from a very obscure indie band.
#3: The Dandy Warhols - Be-In - 170 plays
One of my favorites... seven minutes of awesome.
#4: The Dandy Warhols - Plan A - 164 plays
I don't know why...
#5: The Beta Band - Dry the Rain - 148 plays
Now THIS is probably my favorite song! Beautiful, suits any mood, I almost never skip it, unlike the four songs above this.
I'm surprised there's no Gomez on there... My Top 5 on my last.fm is a bit different.
Please don't write out of the space.

Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles - 55
Gravity - Embrace - 52
