The only science fiction books I read are Next of Kin and the Miles Vorkosigan series.

My feets were cold this morning when I was walking to school from the bus stop. Snow kept on getting on the tops of my shoes, thus total refrigeration of said feets.

That's the first time my feets have actually been cold (outside of my own bed- laying down, my feets are right under a huge single-pane window and it's like 2 degrees outside) for a long time.

My school is stupid though because they say that once it "warms up" to a nice toasty TWENTY-FIVE DEGREES we have to stop wearing coats. #####ing uniforms.

Call them out on scales. Bring a Celsius thermometer.

Yeah, celsius is your friend in this case, I think.

I think he means Farenheit. Who'd want to wear a coat in 25 degree Celcius weather?

Exactly why they'd have a rule insisting you take them off at that temperature. They're only looking out for the health of their students!

Yeah, but he wouldn't be complaining about having to take his coat off then.

That's why I suggested Celsius...

Maybe try Kelvin.

You're missing the point. He wants to wear his coat because it's really cold. But there's a stupid rule. He can turn the rule against them by changing units so he can wear his coat, or at the very least, make them make it warmer.

25 Kelvin? That's -248 Celcius! He'd definitely be dead by then through lack of oxygen. It would be frozen in solid lumps on the ground!

Yeah, with windchill it's about -11 degrees out there, which is pretty darn cold no matter what scale you use.

I do want to wear my coat because it's really cold. And it is a stupid rule. And that is a very good suggestion, I'll keep it in mind.

Although I wish I were using Celsius. I like it much better than *curses the stupid name* Fair-in-height (spelled phonetically so I don't have to worry about stupid h's and i's in bizarre places) temperature.

Meh. Utah's Utah, what do you expect.

... Yes, that one. I think Celsius is a better and easier system, along with the rest of the Metric system.

American way:

Teacher: How many feet are in a mile?

Student: Uh... 1000?

Teacher: No! 5280! Isn't it obvious!

Metric way:

Teacher: How many metres are in a kilometre?*

Student: 1000!

Teacher: Right. Have a cookie.

You see how much better that is?

*I spelled it "metre" because I like to spell it that way. That is all.

It's not a kilofoot, it's a mile! It stands out by itself and thus doesn't need to follow a standard of simplicity. Every school child should know that!

The problem with that example is, nobody ever needs to know how many feet are in a mile. Ever. The only time anybody ever does conversions is in the scientific fields, and they all use SI units anyway. So what's the big deal? I'd rather use units with meaningful lengths. A mile is a fairly long distance, a kilometer is not. A decameter are too short, centimeters are too short. Feet and inches are great compared to those crazy units. Celsius is pretty stupid too. It's just as arbitrary as Fahrenheit. Seriously. Kelvin is really the only unit that makes sense for temperature. And when it comes to numbers, 90 is big, 30 is small. 90 degrees F actually sounds hot. 30 degrees C sounds cold. Crazy.

Remember who invented the metric system. French revolutionaries wanting to change everything, just because they could. They renamed the months too, you know. But they changed back because people eventually realized they were insane.

Celcius is easy. Water freezes at zero and boils at 100. Makes sense. And Kelvin is identical to Celcius, except 273.15 degrees lower.

And why am I dumb, Anaxagoras?

And NO PICTURES, mrxak!

Water is very arbitrary though. They could've gone with hydrogen or something and it would make more sense scientifically.

I agree with CrazyChick here-- Celsius is logical, Farhenheit (or whatever) is completely arbitrary.

By the way, it was over 25 degrees here but I'm sticking with the fact that it was actually -1 degree. Take that, stupid school!
