I'm sure Mac OS * outnumbers Mac OS X.4, but not by a huge amount. My male answer syndrome answer is something like 40%(x.4) to 60%(os *) installed base.

I think its more like 30% to 70%, if not lower. A lot of people don't like paying $130 to update their computer every release every year, so they'll wait for two or three new incarnations before they upgrade again (usually when they get a new computer or when the majority of applications aren't supported anymore - like with pre-Jaguar users right now). And then there's the crowd that doesn't see a reason to upgrade their old Performas ever.
