You must be a dang good student to be only paying 700 a term with no financial aid so I don't think getting merit bases scholarships will be too bad as long as you bug the right people.

Thanks to the revenue New Mexico gets from indian gambling and the lottery, every citizen gets a full tuition scholarship to an in-state school of their choosing so long as they maintain a 2.5 GPA. You could be a pretty mediocre student and still only have to buck up for various student fees and surcharges (around $700/yr). While I do happen to be a very good student with a near perfect GPA, just about everyone gets the same deal I do.

Pufer, financial reasons shouldn't be the reason you choose a school.  If you can go to the best schools, you should.

I never said that I wasn't going to, but that doesn't mean that financial reasons aren't a significant factor in making a choice. Between Yale Law and BYU Law I'd probably go with Yale for the more prestigious education, but between, say, Vanderbilt and BYU, while Vandy is generally held as a better school, BYU is pretty good as well and money ($33K compared to $11K, using last year's figures) may well play a part in which I were to choose. Incidentally, I plan on applying to all three of the above mentioned schools.

Financial aid isn't some cold, hard system; if you explain your situation and why you need financial aid I'm sure you can get it.

It's certainly a cold, hard system when it comes to federal need-based aid, there isn't much arguing with the FAFSA formula for defining "need." I could certainly get some variety of financial aid (and almost certainly will), but need-based aid is a different animal altogether.

As many people here are, I'm a senior currently applying to college (University of Pennsylvania [hehe we beat you yallies 38-21 SA]).  Money isn't really a problem for me (my dad gets a 25% discount at every college because of his job), but even we will get a decent amount of financial aid.  As SA said, few people actually pay the full price for the best colleges.

First off, good luck with your application(s). Secondly, it's always best to prepare for the worst-case scenario and that I will be that poor idiot who does end up paying full price for his trip to law school. It'll be great if I do get a pile of scholarships, grants, and interest-free loans, but I'm certainly not going to count on it.

Also, I might add (I don't know if you filled out the FAFSA) that for people with large land, stock, etc...holdings (not to mention debt) filling out the FAFSA can be a real work out...not to mention extremely intrusive. This can be a problem for some people as many people do not like everyone and their dog looking at your finacial history.

Nice going Pufer on the grades. Keep it up and who knows where you'll end up (Senator Pufer)! :P

Here at Yale we have a saying. "Harvard sucks, Princeton doesn't matter". I'm sorry that UPenn didn't even make it into the saw, but hey, nobody here gives a damn about football anyway. Or basketball. Or any sport, come to think about it...

Trinity? Trinity are a bunch of pricks. Sophomore year a bunch of Trinity guys ran through our dorms spraying fire extinguishers under people's doors. Two of my friend's computers were ruined.

Bah. We at Yale know how to play a prank. And while yes, we did invent football, we also invented the football tailgate, and I'm afraid that me and all the people I know are far more interested in the latter.

Would you believe that this year they want to try and stop us from playing drinking games at The Game? Sacrilege!
