If you could also say a few words as to why you consider that best.

Note: this is not necessarily a "favorite" question as it is a question of the best type for a Noob. Thanks in advance.

For a new player? Actually, I wouldn't say it's "easier" to play with a different type. However, RPGs tend to be a little easier when you aim towards getting as strong as possible - using melee style weapons - such as a swordsman or berzerker. Magic is usually fairly weak unless you're an experienced player.

I'm reserving my vote because I think it depends on your fighting style. If you like characters that get a lot of hit points, you might like a beserker or swordsman. For magic, I would suggest a mystic.

The difference between Mage, Wizard :P, and Mystic:

Mage = 4 Casting, 4 Mana
Casting is the chance that you have to cast a spell, and it is required to learn new spells. Sometimes, you will fail to cast a spell if you have an insufficient amount of it. So the mage is a good character for magic.

Wizard = 6 Casting, 2 Mana
Looking at my username, you'd probably think that I'd suggest this one, but actually I don't play the game as a wizard. The wizard will allow you to learn certain spells faster in the beginning, but will come out with less mana, and in Cythera, mana is very important.

Mystic = 2 Casting, 6 Mana
The mystic will result with the most mana, so if you plan on using magic, I'd say that this is the way to go.

It might be useful to know that any character you start with will show 0 mana until you learn magic at the magisterium.

In case you can't tell, I use a magic character mostly. I have tried most of the others, and of them, I was most impressed with a beserker.
Wizard

Later in the game, if you train like I do, the differences between wizards and mages become insignificant, as casting, mana, and several other things, max at 15.

BTW:
You have to train with both casting and mana with Lindus before you can actually cast a spell.
To get more advanced magic, you have to talk to the librarian. That's something that got me completely until I saw the above mentioned spoiler page.
Unless you plan on staying out of swamps, you had best register.
You put what in my Power Mac?

I like going with one of the magical people Wizard had mentioned, because early-game its easy to level and you're near the attack/defense/etc trainer guy. But later on, (about level 7) it starts slowing down significantly how fast you can gain ability points, and its always nice to have those free magic/casting ones on hand.

... or you get a RAM hacking utility and set your training to 0xFF.

But that'd be cheating and you'd defeat the whole challenge in playing. :P

I believe I played as swordsman, but I don't believe there are any redeeming qualities to the class (it's like fighter, only more restrictive in the weapons you can use).
