Hello all...

I recently restarted my participation inFolding@Home. It's a distributed-computing project that analyzing proteins and how they "fold." I can't really explain exactly what it does because i have no idea. But, I get the impression it's a good thing. You can run the software either as a console window, a screensaver, or a GUI program. There's also a program called InCrease that, if nothing else, figures out how long it'll take to finish(InCrease is mac-only; the Folding client runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux). The ASW boards are team 35022.

Yes, I (and/or someone else) did this recruitment before, but I think it was a long time ago.

Basically, it uses your processor when you aren't and accomplishes something with idle time.

It's all automated, it's not like there's some administrator poking around in your particular computer.

In other words, you're not important. :P

You download the file, process it, and upload the results, you don't need to be constantly connected, just once a day at most.

I'm personally not interested, installing the software drastically increased my system startup time.

It kills battery life and spins my fan up, so I'm gonna have to pass.

I often have to restart every week or so because some java applications don't quit nicely and I end up with small amounts of free RAM.

I had it installed on 9 computers at the office here, then my boss nailed me for it ;) No go this time, sorry.

(I was almost #1 in ASW for a while with my processor farm over here :P)

I just wish they compiled the Linux package for Macs. My 6500 needs something to do while I work on things.

Nice, that explains how you got that many in such a short time...but..

from the FAQ said:

Can I run Folding@Home on a machine I don't own?

Please only run Folding@Home on machines you either own or on which you have the permission of the owner to run our software. Any other use of Folding@Home violates our license agreement (and just isn't a good idea in general).

That 6500 will run Ares. That should be enough for here.
